dolphins
Most teams are announcing their captains for the 2021 season if they're into that sort of thing. Being that the leader of the offense is the quarterback, that means one of the team's captains is typically the QB. So, it's pretty puzzling that starting QB Tua Tagovailoa isn't one of the Miami Dolphins' five captains for the 2021 season. Hmmm... cue the rumors.
patriots
The New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins meet frequently, but Week One's matchup has another point of significance. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones and second-year QB Tua Tagovailoa will meet as opponents for the first time since being teammates at Alabama. Jones is looking forward to it. "Tua's an awesome guy. He's really a good, talented football player. Learning from him and Jalen was great, obviously. Now that we're all getting a chance here in the NFL, I think it'll be cool to go up against each other."
--
Cam Newton was cut from the Patriots about a week ago but hasn't spoken about it yet. On Wednesday, Newton teased a video where he's presumably going to talk about it set to be released on Friday. However, he gets the rumors out of the way by assuring fans that he isn't announcing his retirement. At least, not yet.
browns
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is one of a select group that are due (huge) new contracts pretty much any day now. But, it doesn't look like it will be happening that soon for Mayfield. Apparently both sides are fine with waiting it out. The Browns get the benefit of seeing Mayfield develop further (and with the motivation of last year, I expect he will) before paying him. Mayfield gets the benefit of the old "betting on myself" trick. It's worked out well for quite a few guys.
jets
It may be a revenge game for Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold as he plays the New York Jets this weekend, but rookie Jets QB Zach Wilsonâ isn't thinking of it like that. "He's doing his own thing now. He's got a great situation going for him. I think the organization already decided to go one way, and it's not because Sam isn't a good football player. It's just that they wanted a fresh start."
saints
Jameis Winston has been announced as the starter for the âNew Orleans Saints, and it wasn't exactly an easy road for him. However, he's thankful that he's getting a second chance as a starter, even if it means trying to fill the shoes of future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. "It's a blessing to have this opportunity to lead the pack, and I'm just grateful for it. It's been more than a year removed for me having the opportunity, and I'm not taking it for granted."
jaguars
Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence was named a captain for the 2021 season, a big honor for being a rookie. Because it was voted on by his teammates, Lawrence is already feeling the love in the locker room despite being a rookie. "It's a really cool feeling, especially as a younger guy, just having that support from my teammates. "
packers
As it's more than likely his last season in a Green Bay Packers uniform, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is ready to experience this season for all it's worth. "I'm speaking personally, and I can't speak for everybody. But I feel that I get with the energy in the locker room is not pressure. It's focus. I think it's the right perspective and the right type of focus. We know we have a talented team; we know what the expectations are. We're going to enjoy this year for all that it has to offer, and each other."

patriots
Cam Newton was pretty much a lock for the New England Patriots' starting quarterback job, and then this week happened. Long story short, Newton didn't quite follow COVID-19 protocols and was required to stay away from the team for the week, which gave all reps with the starting team to rookie Mac Jones. Jones has been taking the reins in practice and is currently breathing down Newton's neck for the starting role. This will be something to keep an eye on.
falcons
The savior of the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback position is here, hallelujah. Josh Rosen has signed with the team, and should be in line as the best QB on the team in no time. Head coach Arthur Smith agrees with me, saying he expects Rosen to play in the final preseason game. "That's only the fair thing to do. We signed him. We have to figure out this backup quarterback spot. So, you'll see him play at some point Sunday night." Challenge accepted.
buccaneers
Tom Brady may be more like us, after all. After winning the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February, Brady underwent knee surgery to repair a torn MCL. Brady spoke about his recovery from surgery this week, detailing the process. "When you miss time and you don't continue to train the way you're capable of training, it's tough because your body wants to, you know, it feels like, 'OK I get time off.' And then you get your body going again, it's hard."
colts
After being questionable to start the 2021 season, it seems like Carson Wentz is trending in the right direction for the Indianapolis Colts' opener. Wentz returned to practice earlier this week from foot surgery, and so far, so good. The next step? Going through a practice without any restrictions.
jaguars
The inevitable happened. Trevor Lawrence has been announced as the Jacksonville Jaguars' starting quarterback, which pretty much everyone knew was going to happen. Lawrence was, of course, asked about how he felt about the situation. "I'm really excited for the opportunity; I'm grateful for it. It doesn't really change anything though. We still have the same task in front of us."
bengals
Joe Burrow will finally be making his debut since tearing his ACL late last season. While I assumed Burrow wouldn't see any preseason action due to protecting his health behind that horrid offensive line, Burrow should play in the Cincinnati Bengals' final preseason game. And that's okay with him.
49ers
San Francisco 49ers fans wanted you to believe all along that there was a quarterback competition, but as it turns out (and like I told you all along), there really hasn't been one at all. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said as much, without really naming his starter, which he honestly doesn't even have to do. "I've got a pretty good idea," he said. "I've always had a pretty good idea, but there's a lot of days between now and then, at every position."
-quick notes-
he won't go away
colts sign eric fisher
Eric Fisher has a new home. The Indianapolis Colts are signing the former Kansas City Chiefs left tackle to a one-year deal worth $9.4 million.
Fisher was the Chiefs' No. 1 pick in 2013 and has been on that offensive line ever since. Until he tore his Achilles in January during the worst possible time -- the AFC Championship. You could even go as far as to say that injury, followed by the fact that Kansas City only had a short amount of time to adjust, was the reason they lost the Super Bowl last winter. Anyways, the Chiefs released him (along with fellow offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz in March. Fisher goes from protecting Patrick Mahomes to protecting Carson Wentz, and it's fair to say there is an equal amount of pressure on him to perform in Indy. Wentz's re-emergence could depend on it. And they may have to wait until October to find out. tebow time in jacksonville?
I haven't stopped laughing at this since the news first came out, but yes, it seems like it could be Tebow Time once again. How this man managed this one is beyond me. Tim Tebow made the smart decision to switch positions from quarterback to tight end (which he should have done years ago, but that's not my point) and will reunite with Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer.
Again... HOW??? What does Tebow have on Meyer? There could be an instance that he doesn't make the team and is just a 'camp body,' because in all honesty -- a 34-year old tight end who just switched positions and hasn't played football in a very significant amount of time doesn't exactly scream "winning" to me. More importantly, if Tebow takes a roster spot from someone else, there will be many angry people. big story: alex smith hangs up the cleats
Veteran quarterback and inspiring success story Alex Smith announced his retirement today. After a devastating leg injury in 2018 threatened not only his football career but his overall health, Smith returned to the field last season with the Washington Football Team. Smith also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
This is the correct decision for Smith by a mile. While I can't overlook his inspiration and the aspiration to return to what he loves doing to prove himself right, I also can't be alone in saying that I covered my eyes whenever someone came near him on the field. We all knew he was one injury away from never walking again. That being said, Smith is an intelligent football player, is relatable, and has the knowledge to go into a new field -- coaching, perhaps? The Jacksonville Jaguars would be a top spot for that to occur, with Urban Meyer running the show over there. You can see Smith's full announcement, which was posted on Instagram, here. small story: bengals unveil new uniforms
If you're into this sort of thing (I am not) the Cincinnati Bengals unveiled their new uniforms today. Honestly they don't look that different to me, but if I had to pick one, I'm going with those all-whites. Clean.
tweet of the day:
big story: Sponsors dropping Deshaun Watson left and rightAfter a damning press conference where a statement was read by the first accuser, sponsors are dropping Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson amid accusations of sexual misconduct. Nike announced earlier today they were suspending all endorsements with Watson and Beats By Dre was next, completely dropping him from campaigns. Reliant Energy, the company behind the naming rights to the Texans' stadium, NRG Energy also cut ties with Watson, saying they will no longer partner with him as an ambassador. The dominoes are falling, and things like this are likely to continue. Reminder that Watson is innocent until proven guilty. Also reminder that women should be believed when it comes to reporting sexual assault. This situation is disturbing in every facet and there is no real winner in a situation. small story: draft prospects to attend draft in-person
With things slowly getting back to our "new normal," the 2021 NFL Draft will be holding festivities in Cleveland this year. And that includes inviting prospects to the draft itself. While some have turned down the invite, most notably presumed first pick Trevor Lawrence, a good handful of those top guys are expected to attend.

Trevor Lawrence is rehabbing his shoulder
Presumed first pick Trevor Lawrence had surgery in early February on a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, and is well into his recovery. Lawrence, who is likely to head to the Jacksonville Jaguars if all goes to plan, posted photos of his rehab process.
Lawrence is said to need up to six months of rehab before he's ready to play as normal and says he'll be ready for training camp this summer. His soon-to-be head coach Urban Meyer assisted Lawrence in timing his surgery and recovery process. âHe better not cut that hair either. Dolphins to release kyle van noy
The Miami Dolphins are set to release linebacker Kyle Van Noy this offseason from the four-year deal that he signed just last year. Van Noy is a likely cap casualty, saving the team almost $10 million in cap space.
Van Noy responded, saying he was "surprised and disappointed" by the move. jj watt will wear no. 99 for cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have officially un-retired the No. 99, once held by Marshall Goldberg, so their newest member, JJ Watt can wear it. Watt says he spoke to Goldberg's daughter and she gave her blessing for him to use it.
All I know is NOBODY better be un-retiring No. 20 in Baltimore. jags announce trent baalke as new general manager
The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the hiring of Trent Baalke as their new general manager on Thursday.
Baalke was named the interim general manager when Dave Caldwell was fired in November and will take on the full-time role. He was also the GM for the San Francisco 49ers 2011 to 2016, with some winning under his belt -- something the Jags aren't quite used to. The challenge for Baalke will be to recreate the culture in Jacksonville and potentially start the transition from a "losing team" to a "winning one." Baalke will have a lot to work with (and high expectations) with new head coach Urban Meyer and (probably) quarterback Trevor Lawrence. dwayne haskins visiting pittsburgh
Former Washington Football Team and 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins is visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. An interesting potential home for him.
Haskins was let go (I'll put it nicely) by Washington earlier this season, after a mix of not playing well and a video surfacing of him partying mask-less ended up being the final straw. Haskins also visited with the Carolina Panthers. Pittsburgh has an opening at third-string quarterback, with Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph taking up the top two spots. Devlin Hodges and Josh Dobbs are likely no more (not dead, just out of Pittsburgh). Haskins is a guy with a lot of baggage that will probably get him a low-type deal -- low risk if he doesn't work out, high reward if he ends up genuinely turning over another leaf and proving people wrong. I'm in the camp that this is the perfect opportunity for Haskins to learn something from his time in Washington and salvage his career if he wants to.
UPDATE: Haskins is expected to sign with Pittsburgh. How about that.
eagles hire nick sirianni as head coach
The Philadelphia Eagles have found their head coach. Former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni gets the nod in Philly.
Sirianni has spent the past three seasons with the Colts as their offensive coordinator. The Eagles fired Doug Pederson at the end of the 2020 season after attempting to tank (don't act like this isn't the real reason). The only remaining head coach opening in the NFL is the Houston Texans, and ain't nobody wanna go there. Let's be honest. |
