The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions. Again. And Patrick Mahomes is Super Bowl MVP. Again. After winning the league's Most Valuable Player Award on Thursday, Mahomes is the first player to win both in the same season since 1999. He's also the first regular-season passing yards leader to win the Super Bowl. Mahomes completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. On a bum ankle. And added an additional 44 yards rushing. more QB News:

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been dealing with a shoulder injury for over a month, but it didn't look like it hindered him much in the NFC Championship Game. Hurts said Thursday that he's still working through it but expects to play.

On the one-year anniversary of his retiring for the first time, Tom Brady has retired again. And this time, it seems like it's for real (maybe). Brady wanted to announce his decision via video rather than the lengthy, drawn-out statement he put out last February. He said it's for good this time, but I'll believe that when I see it.
There were plenty of rumors about Brady playing elsewhere in 2023 - Las Vegas and San Francisco being the two favorites - and then a return to Tampa Bay was also floated as a possibility. It came down to a return to the Buccaneers and retirement. The Bucs found out about his decision around the same time we did.

On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance told reporters he'd be cleared soon after undergoing two surgeries on his broken ankle. Lance is expected to be a full-go by OTAs. This is good news for the Niners, who are expected to be rid of Jimmy Garoppolo soon and have Brock Purdy out for at least six months.
Speaking of 49ers QBs, rookie Brock Purdy is currently awaiting second opinions on his injured UCL - a repair vs. reconstruction surgery will determine the time he will be able to return to football activities. Purdy told reporters on Tuesday that he will make a final decision soon.

San Francisco 49ers rookie QB Brock Purdy suffered a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, as was confirmed by an MRI on Monday. Purdy is crossing his fingers that he'll need surgery to repair it and be out for six months. If he needs an entire reconstruction, it may take up to a year for him to be fully recovered.

The New York Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator on Thursday, sparking questions about whether Aaron Rodgers will come with the deal. With the Zach Wilson Experience on the back burner, Hackett's previous experience with Rodgers is an intriguing option for a team desperate for a starting-caliber QB. Head coach Robert Saleh said on Thursday that the team is committed to bringing in a veteran QB but didn't get into any names.

One of the biggest stories this week will be the availability of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes noticeably rolled his ankle in this weekend's game, took a drive off, and then came right back into the game. Mahomes was not his usual self, as he couldn't move around as much, but he still pulled off a win. Head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes is planning to play next week.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a non-contact knee injury on the third play during Monday Night Football.
Murray was in the middle of a scramble when his knee appeared to buckle. (I'm not going to post the video, but you can look for it if you want to see it.) Murray was carted off the field, surrounded by teammates, and quickly ruled questionable to return. Murray was later ruled out by the team in the second quarter with a knee injury. Backup QB Colt McCoy replaced him.
Reports began to emerge throughout the game that Murray had torn his ACL. Murray will have an MRI on Tuesday to confirm.

The Carolina Panthers are ending the Baker Mayfield experiment. Mayfield asked the team for his release on Monday morning, and the team promptly granted it. Sam Darnold appears to be the clear-cut starter from now on, with PJ Walker in the wings. Mayfield was set to become a free agent in 2023, so there is no sense in keeping him around.
The Cleveland Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick and a salary agreement after acquiring alleged predator Deshaun Watson. As for a new home, the top choice obviously points to the San Francisco 49ers, having lost starter Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday to a broken foot. Other teams who could be interested (in my opinion) who could use a quarterback include Houston, New England, Indianapolis, New Orleans, or the Los Angeles Rams.
