THE DROP-BACK: TUESDAY 08/03 - WENTZ PROBS PT. 2

8/3/2021

COLTS

  • Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz went back on his original plan to rest his foot injury, rehab it, and hope it gets better before the season begins -- now he'll have surgery, keeping him out for as many as 12 weeks. Wentz will have surgery in Indianapolis. Not a great start for a guy looking to have a re-emergence.

Colts' QB Carson Wentz is undergoing foot surgery this afternoon in Indianapolis, per source. Dr. David Porter, an orthopedic foot specialist who works with the Colts and is highly regarded, will be performing the surgery.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 2, 2021
  • So who's going to run the show while Wentz is out? Apparently, Jacob Eason is. Head coach Frank Reich says Eason is the starter right now, but could that change if the Colts decide to trade for a veteran QB? *cough Nick Foles cough*

“The job is Jacob’s right now … and he’s gotta earn it. But he’s in the driver’s seat.” — Frank Reich on Jacob Eason with Carson Wentz out the next several weeks

— Zak Keefer (@zkeefer) August 2, 2021

Bears

  • Speaking of Foles, who will likely get calls sooner rather than later, he seems to be gassing himself up for that lucky (??) team who calls the Chicago Bears to ask about him. "Listen, I'm 32. I feel great. The version of me right now is much better than the version that played the Super Bowl, I'll tell you that. And I'm confident in that." I don't know about all that, but I admire the sentiment, Nick.
  • As for the other Bears QBs, rookie Justin Fields was a star in his press conference today, sounding like a pro already. And "starter" Andy Dalton is just avoiding all questions about whether he thinks he'll start or not and making general statements. "I've been a part of so many systems that there's not many plays that are new to me." Pin a rose on your nose, Andy.

49ers

  • San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday (again) that Jimmy Garoppolo is still the starter and that rookie Trey Lance isn't ready at this time to take reps with the No. 1's. So please listen to him. The Niners gave up a lot to get their guy at No.3, but he likely won't be the guy this year - and that's OK. "Trey can wait till he's at his best self, which doesn't happen overnight."

rams

  • This year, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is probably the player with the largest magnifying glass on him since he's migrated to an actual NFL team this offseason. He's hit his first snag in the road by banging his thumb on a helmet during Monday's training camp practice. Don't panic yet -- the team thinks he'll be okay as of now.

The Rams got a scare when QB Matthew Stafford hit his throwing thumb on a helmet near the end of practice. Stafford left the field with the thumb wrapped, but holding his helmet with that hand. "I don't know anything yet," coach Sean McVay said. "I think he'll be OK."

  • In one of the biggest trades of the offseason, the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams swapped quarterbacks. While Matthew Stafford upgraded from life in Detroit to life in LA, Jared Goff was given the shit-end of the deal and got stuck with the Lions. As for the expectations for Goff this season, general manager Brad Holmes says he never saw Goff as being one-and-done up north. "I never viewed him as a bridge option. He's been a winning quarterback. I think his resume speaks for itself."
  • If you missed it yesterday, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out as openly gay. There was so much support from players and fans around the league (including myself), including Raiders owner Mark Davis and president Marc Badain.

I asked @Raiders president Marc Badain for his thoughts on Carl Nassib's courageous announcement yesterday. His answer here ⬇️ #Raiders pic.twitter.com/U5BOZ4kL3I

— Cassie Soto (@_CassieSoto) June 22, 2021
  • While I believe that Justin Fields will start the season as the Chicago Bears quarterback, head coach Matt Nagy insists that the job belongs to Andy Dalton. Fields is saying all the right things so far and not disagreeing with his new team's plan. "So my job is strictly to get better, to be the best quarterback I can be, and help my team win." He can't be worse than Dalton.

NFL Notes: Tuesday 06/22 - Eli Manning is back back

6/22/2021

  • Former starting quarterback and Super Bowl champion Eli Manning is re-joining the New York Giants -- but not in the way you would think. Manning is taking a "business operations and fan engagement role" with the team. "Staying involved with this organization is very important to me. I love the organization, love the Giants and the fans, and so I want to do anything possible to help them out and be a part of it," he said in a statement. Add this to the list of Things Eli can do that Brady can't.
  • As if we need more Tom Brady in our lives, the Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB is in a new episode of The Shop: Uninterrupted on HBO. In the trailer for the episode, Brady talks candidly about his time bout with free agency last offseason, specifically with one team that supposedly did not want to sign him in the end: "One of the teams, they weren't interested at the very end. I was thinking, you're sticking with that motherfucker?" I'm manifesting that this is about Derek Carr, but it could also be about Mitch Trubisky. And no, he isn't going to be talking about his pal â€‹Jimmy Garoppolo â€‹like that.
  • Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert will be learning a new offense this year under new head coach Brandon Staley. Herbert is looking to build upon his explosive rookie season and is spending "a few hours" each day studying his new scheme. "The tough part is memorizing and learning it all. That's where it's tough because you have to go in there and spend a lot of time watching film, practicing and repping it."
  • Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is getting a new quarterback this year, and it's one he can't stop gushing about. Experience is vital for McVay, who is looking forward to seeing what Matthew Stafford can do this year. "Bro, this dude is a bad MF-er. Whatever people say about him, as good as it can be, he's even better than advertised. It makes sense to him." We're going to learn a whole lot about Stafford this season.
  • Today in Things We Love To See, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib came out as openly gay on Monday. But better than that, he also donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project, which focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. Check out his message:

  • I feel like rookie New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has been shit-talked lately. But his teammates are keeping the faith, which I guess, they kinda have to do. Vet safety Devin McCourty thinks he has enough leadership skills to make it work at the position. "That's a different position being a young guy because you're automatically in that leadership role. But I think he's used to that."
  • The Baltimore Ravens ranked at No. 32 in passing yards and passing attempts last season, so it's not a secret that that's a significant need for improvement heading into the 2021 season. QB Lamar Jackson agreed, saying they need to focus on consistency. "We hit some of them, but we're just trying to be more consistent this year. That's where the strides happen. It starts in practices, and hopefully, it transitions to the game."
  • Despite a previous report, Buffalo Bills fans no longer have to be vaccinated to attend Bills games this season. Erie County is basing this info off of low hospitalization rates and good vaccination rates. Tell that to Cole Beasley.

Based on few new COVID-19 cases (0 on Friday and 4 yesterday out of thousands of tests), low hospitalizations, and good vaccination rates, we are rescinding the vaccination requirement to attend Bills games and stadium events. We will revisit in future if circumstances warrant. pic.twitter.com/DO9echOulB

NFL Notes: Friday 06/11 - I'm the specialist

6/11/2021

  • As other NFL teams are bringing in vaccination experts to educate players and coaches on the advantages of getting vaccinated prior to the NFL season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians is going a different route. And I don't know about y'all, but I'd be one to listen to Bruce.

I asked Bruce Arians if he brought in a specialist to talk to players about the vaccine like coach Ron Rivera did in Washington.

“I’M THE SPECIALIST,” Arians said.

He told players, “If you want to go back to normal, get vaccinated.” pic.twitter.com/CDX92Kgsuh

— JennaLaineESPN (@JennaLaineESPN) June 10, 2021
  • San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had some ...interesting words to say about their first-round draft pick, Trey Lance, following workouts this week. "I never say whether it was good or bad because just going through it is good even if he didn't do that good, which I thought he did." Ok, Kyle.
  • New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton injured his hand in practice last week after banging it on a teammate's helmet. Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed to reporters Thursday that Newton is doing alright and won't be doing much practicing until it heals. Rookie Mac Jones and Jarrett Stidham took all the QB reps. Godspeed.

Belichick surprisingly acknowledges Cam Newton's hand injury. "He's doing alright. He won't be out there today but it's nothing serious. ... He'll be alright." pic.twitter.com/oYYZFck1Ap

— Ben Volin (@BenVolin) June 10, 2021
  • Speaking of Mac Jones, who hasn't exactly had the best camp, he said the collective effort from the quarterback room in New England is going to help them all get better. AKA he already has the 'media savvy' part down. "We're just coming in every day -- there's four guys and I am the rookie, so I am just learning from them. They have all been very nice to me, treated me well and I am just trying to help them out as much as I can." I'm sure they're good, Mac.
  • Matthew Stafford has a lot of work to do this offseason with his new team. And his new receivers. Stafford says he's excited to work with his new Los Angeles Rams teammates, specifically his "weapons." "There's guys in there I didn't even list that I think are really good players that are going to help us come fall, both in the receiver room, the backs, the tight ends. So I'm just excited about all of it."
  • Even though Shaq Barrett won a Super Bowl just a few months ago, AND got a pretty hefty contract to follow that up, he's not letting himself become complacent. Barrett's eyes are on Defensive Player of the Year. If he can keep his late-postseason streak going (four sacks and eight QB hits), he may be able to do just that.

THIS ENERGY >>@ShaquilBarrett pic.twitter.com/nq2aJ7jXQr

— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) June 10, 2021
  • I thought we were over this already, but Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray told reporters today that he isn't closing the door when it comes to potentially playing baseball again, the sport he almost chose over football.

Kyler Murray continues to talk about playing pro baseball at some point. He knows he can't, he acknowledges the Cardinals certainly aren't thinking that way, but he says -- with a smile -- he doesn't want to close the door.

"I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just talking."

— Darren Urban (@Cardschatter) June 10, 2021
  • Rookie quarterback Justin Fields is getting high praise from teammates and coaches lately. This latest one comes from receiver Darnell Mooney, who was lucky enough to catch a few deep balls from Fields. "I've caught one or two deep balls from him. The very first one that he threw up to me I was smiling mid-route of just seeing the ball in the air and just where it was placed." Hmm. Andy Dalton could never.

Greg olsen's son gets heart transplant

Starting things off with a feel-good story: Eight-year-old TJ Olsen, son of recently retired tight end Greg Olsen, received a heart transplant over the weekend. He is currently still in recovery but is in good spirits.

Someone has an update pic.twitter.com/L1Zk2AgHpd

— Greg Olsen (@gregolsen88) June 7, 2021

TJ was born with a heart defect and has had multiple heart surgeries throughout his life. Olsen's foundation, The HEARTest Yard, focuses on care for children who have conditions like his son. You can find more info or even donate here.

jalen ramsey wishes rams went after julio jones

Los Angeles Rams corner Jalen Ramsey has never shied away from speaking his mind. Now he's questioning why his team wasn't more "in" on star wide receiver Julio Jones before he was traded to the Tennessee Titans over the weekend.

Imma have myself a good Sunday but this is all it took for a generational guy & we were “out” of the Julio sweepstakes!? Wow □□‍♂️ we woulda been unstoppable forreal with all them weapons lol! Julio to the 615 fye tho! https://t.co/MGp8HxbyKl

— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) June 6, 2021

Many players (and fans) can probably relate to this sentiment, especially since the payback for Jones looks to be so cheap in terms of getting said "generational guy." In the Rams' case, they already have plenty of financial commitments to big-name players, including Ramsey. Newly acquired quarterback Matthew Stafford is one of them, along with Aaron Donald. Los Angeles did ask about Jones (likely asked the price, if I were to guess) early on, before saying, "no thanks, we're good."

ja'wuan james signs with ravens

This one is, for lack of better words, puzzling. After filing a grievance against the Denver Broncos for cutting him after he tore his Achilles working out away from the team's facility, the Baltimore Ravens have signed James to a two-year deal, even though he won't see the field this year.

Ja'Wuan James’ agents, Bill Johnson and Matt Pope, negotiated the two-year deal with the Ravens that includes $500,000 in guaranteed money this year, per source. So the Ravens are paying him $500k to rehab this year and to have him under contract north of $8 million next year. https://t.co/xXe4ESwqYm

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 7, 2021

Fans are raving about this and calling it "genius," but they do that with every move the Ravens make these days. I'm still filing this one under "a head-scratcher."

bills have no update on josh allen's contract

Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen is in the group of QBs due their first "big" contract extension following their rookie deals. While it's something Buffalo wants to get done sooner rather than later, GM Brandon Beane gave no updates on Monday when he was asked about a likely extension.

Brandon Beane on Josh Allen’s contract:

“No, there’s really nothing to give you on that. If something were to happen this summer, we’re definitely let you know and hopefully it’s coming from us and not being broke somewhere else. Other than that, there nothing I can give you."

— James Palmer (@JamesPalmerTV) June 7, 2021

There are no doubts that this will get done, but I can't lie when I say I'm interested to see these Numbers. With a capital N.

aaron rodgers won't show up for minicamp, as expected

This was expected (at least for me), but Aaron Rodgers is not expected to attend Green Bay Packers minicamp, after no-showing at OTAs.

Source on #Packers star QB Aaron Rodgers: “No change.”

So the expectation, barring any developments overnight, is the NFL MVP won’t be reporting for minicamp.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) June 7, 2021

Everyone from the team to the coaches to the front office crossed all their fingers and toes that Rodgers will swallow it up and show up, but alas. It's a no-go. I'm not going to break down the entire feud between him and the team (if you're reading this, you likely already know), but basically, Rodgers is making a point here.

Green Bay can still fine Rodgers a pretty penny for not attending (over $90,000) minicamp, in addition to the $500,000 workout bonus that was voided when he didn't show up for OTAs. Rodgers is saying he's choosing winning over money and wants to be in on certain decisions and generally just wants to be heard.

divisional round: packers move past rams

packers get on the board first

The Los Angeles Rams began Saturday's game going three-and-out, but the Green Bay Packers got on the board first. The Rams' defense held them to three points, as linebacker Troy Reeder broke up a touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to receiver Allen Lazard.

Davante Adams has the first td of the day

And it's a pretty one. Rodgers fired off a quick one to receiver Davante Adams, a play perfectly designed to keep Rams star cornerback Jalen Ramsey away from the ball.

packers up on rams at halftime

The Packers have dominated the first half so far and are up on Los Angeles 19-10 at the half. The Rams answered with a score of their own late in the second quarter but are gonna have to do more than that going forward. Green Bay gets the ball at the start of the second half.

turns out everyone is named 'aaron' in green bay is good

The Packers got the ball in the second half, and running back Aaron Jones made sure to make the most of it with a 60-yard run.

the Rams have some fight in them

The Rams were able to march down the field, completely obliterating Green Bay's defense in the process. The result? A Cam Akers touchdown, where he lined up in the wildcat formation. Los Angeles tried this two other times so far during this game, and this situation was the perfect time for it to work.

packers move on, rams go home

The Packers are moving on to the NFC Championship game, defeating Los Angeles 32-18. The next round will feature 37-year old Rodgers, and either Tom Brady or Drew Brees, and I don't think we need to talk about how old they are. It's been drilled into our heads all week.

Urban Meyer and the jags inch closer towards a deal

After about a week or so of constant rumors, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Urban Meyer are taking more steps towards making him the latest head coach of the team. The two parties met again on Wednesday, and it's looking like the rumors could morph into reality any minute now.

At this time, it’s Jacksonville as the one and only for Urban Meyer. Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan’s process has led him to Meyer, and Meyer is highly interested, and the two sides are interested in trying to finalize a deal this week. https://t.co/gDpE46pyuG

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 14, 2021

The
Los Angeles Chargers were also rumored to have contacted Meyer, but they had no formal interview with him for the position. Adam Schefter says above that the Jags seem to be the only choice for Meyer.

Meyer would get the chance to transform the Jacksonville franchise and (maybe) utilize the actual talent on the roster (and incoming talent) correctly, something the team has been missing for a long while.

kevin stefanski back with browns

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski missed last week's playoff game after testing positive for COVID-19 but is now back with the team on Thursday.

Ten days after testing positive for COVID-19, #Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is back at the team's facility today as preparations continue for Sunday's playoff against the #Chiefs.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 14, 2021

I'm just as surprised as all of you that the Browns could pull off a win last week without their head coach, who is my pick for Coach of the Year. They're up against the
Kansas City Chiefs this week, which is a whole different ballgame as far as playoff games go.

The Browns also activated Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson off of the COVID-19 list on Wednesday. Will they win? Check out my picks for this week on Patreon.

Jared goff will start for rams on saturday

After not starting for the past two weeks, quarterback Jared Goff will start for the Los Angeles Rams in Saturday's divisional-round against the Green Bay Packers. Backup quarterback John Wolford is out with a neck injury that he suffered in last weekend's win.

John Wolford is OUT Saturday, per Sean McVay.

— Andrew Siciliano (@AndrewSiciliano) January 14, 2021

Goff had thumb surgery a few weeks ago and played most of last weekend's game, despite not starting. With a full week of practice and is listed as a full participant, it looks like he'll be more prepared this week.
Blake Bortles will serve as the backup.

For some reason, the Seattle Seahawks are on the struggle bus, when it really should be the Rams given their situation(s). Wide receiver DK Metcalf came to play, however, scoring a 51-yarder, cutting their lead 13-10.

rams are ahead at halftime

Even with losing their starting quarterback and having to play with an injured Goff, the Rams are up on Seattle at halftime, 20-10. One of the main reasons is rookie running back Cam Akers, who is making plays in his playoff debut.

Akers finished the first half with over 100 yards rushing and a touchdown.

seahawks fumble punt, rams score off it

It hasn't exactly been the Seahawks' best day. Returner DJ Reed fumbled, resulting in Rams' ball. And Los Angeles naturally turned it into a touchdown.

rams beat seahawks, badly

The Rams defense came out swinging on Saturday, even with the loss of star Aaron Donald. Los Angeles completely took Seahawks QB Russell Wilson out of the game, pulling out a 30-20 victory, and an advancement to next week. I'll wait until we see the availability of the players though. It looks... bleak.

bucs get on the board first with a field goal

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got on the scoreboard first against the Washington Football Team with a field goal on their opening drive. More importantly, Washington's defense was able to knock Bucs QB Tom Brady down more than once.

Brady is playing like Brady in the playoffs (and yelling at people too). He's thrown two touchdowns already, one to Chris Godwin and one to Antonio Brown.

allow me to introduce taylor Heinicke

If you laughed at the fact that Washington was starting QB Taylor Heinicke (we all did, don't lie), here is your introduction:

Los Angeles Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth was carted off the field during Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks with a tough-looking injury. The good news is he didn't tear his ACL. The bad news is he's going on injured reserve anyway. Whitworth's initial diagnosis is a torn MCL and a damaged PCL.

#Rams LT Andrew Whitworth suffered a torn MCL, source said following tests tonight. He also has damage to his PCL. The respected veteran is headed to Injured Reserve. The good news is his ACL is intact.

Joe Noteboom assumed responsibility for Whitworth after his exit and will likely be in his spot moving forward. The Rams take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next weekend.
