fake news

  • New Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel apparently has a "no bullshit" rule. While rumors swirled around (that made absolutely zero sense, but that's beside the point) that Tom Brady was being traded to the Dolphins, McDaniel shut it down quickly. Brady will be a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, and that's all there is to it.

  • HBO announced on Monday that the team chosen for this year's season of Hard Knocks would be the Detroit Lions. The Lions were one of the worst teams in the league last year and haven't had a winning season since 2017. However, their coach Dan Campbell is sure to come up with a few made-for-television soundbites, though, I'm sure.

  • The NFL owners' meetings are underway, which means we get to hear from all the head coaches about how their lives are going. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is heading into his 23rd year as head coach of the Patriots and didn't mince words when asked how he felt about it. You can tell by his face.

  • During owners' meetings, new Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels was on the hot seat today. He was asked about his inconsistent quarterback before being very facetious about his future with the team. He didn't say anything to insinuate that Derek Carr wouldn't be with the team moving forward, but he also didn't exactly give him a glowing recommendation.

  • If we've learned anything from this offseason so far, it's that no NFL player is un-tradeable. That, apparently, will not be the case for the New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley. There's been speculation around the league that Barkley, a former first-round pick, was being shopped by the team to pursue a considerable return. I am in the camp that believes Barkley deserves better (his team is utter garbage), but the Giants have made their decision, and Barkley is staying put. At least for now.

Joe Schoen: “Haven’t called one team on Saquon Barkley.” He says they’ve had some calls but he’s a good player. Was the No. 2 pick for a reason.

  • Before signing with the Miami Dolphins, another team was reportedly in the race to trade for Tyreek Hill. But he didn't have much interest in signing with the New York Jets if we are judging by this statement.

Doesn't sound like @cheetah was even close to picking the #Jets after all. pic.twitter.com/uyHYRWiW3c

— Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) March 24, 2022
  • After trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, the Kansas City Chiefs were in the market for another star-wide receiver. They got theirs on Thursday by signing former Green Bay Packer Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year deal worth up to $36 million. While you're still probably not completely replacing such a dynamic player like Hill, MVS is a solid option in a position of need.

The #Chiefs are signing former #Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year, $30 million deal with $18 million in the first two years and incentives to reach a maximum of $36 million, his agents @NSAFootball tell @RapSheet and me. □□

  • Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals had some ~drama~ this offseason when Murray scrubbed his Instagram account from all traces of the team. His agent then released a statement basically stating, "fuck you, pay me." Murray appears to have squashed all of that drama (as of now, at least). Murray is likely still looking for a new contract, but all seems good between the two.

  • NFL draft prospect Desmond Ridder had his Pro Day on Thursday, and several teams were in attendance. Several teams who made the trip are in dire need of a quarterback, but some are not. The Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, and New Orleans Saints are a few of those "dark horse" teams that could make a push for the Cincinnati QB.

The day of big qb news bombs

3/9/2022

  • The Denver Broncos may have missed out on the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, but they have a big name of their own headed their way. Russell Wilson is heading to Denver, and they're insisting that he was their target all along. That may be true, but it seems a tad suspect to me. Wilson will join the NFC West with Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and Derek Carr, which is interesting, to say the least. The Seahawks also received QB Drew Lock, DL Shelby Harris, TE Noah Fant, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth-round pick. That's quite a haul.

Blockbuster: After weeks of negotiations, in one of the largest trades in NFL history, the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos have agreed to terms for a deal involving Super-Bowl winning QB Russell Wilson, sources tell ESPN.

Trade is pending a physical and Wilson’s approval. pic.twitter.com/oRFDV8Ehyx

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 8, 2022
  • After weeks of drama, Aaron Rodgers revealed on Tuesday via his friend Pat McAfee that he planned to return to the Green Bay Packers for the 2022 NFL season. On top of that, Rodgers was reported to have signed a massive deal: four years, $200 million, with $150 million guaranteed. This makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history. (It was later "reported" by Rodgers himself that the contract numbers weren't accurate, although I'm not sure if that is the truth, or he was just sick of getting overshadowed by Russell Wilson.)

The #Packers and MVP QB Aaron Rodgers have agreed to terms on a 4-year, $200M deal that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history, sources say. He gets a whopping $153M guaranteed and his cap number goes down. A monstrous commitment by GB for years to come. □ □ □

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 8, 2022
  • So now that Rodgers is back, what's next for Jordan Love? The Packers drafted Love three seasons ago, with the intention of his taking over for Rodgers in a few years. Now that Rodgers' deal is for four years, it doesn't seem like that will happen. With several quarterbacks who are far more in-demand than he is, it's going to be interesting to see where he ends up or if he goes anywhere. And then there's this report of him maybe garnering a second-rounder, which is far off the wall for me.

Just hit up a few NFL scouts about potential asking price for Jordan Love. Most think Packers could get a 2nd round pick for him. Feeling is talent & upside worth that roll of dice.

— Jim Nagy (@JimNagy_SB) March 8, 2022
  • In other quarterback news, one of the most intriguing stories this offseason will be where Mitchell Trubisky could end up. While Chicago didn't seem to be his place, he suffered from "I'm On a Bad Team" syndrome and is now someone worthy of being watched this offseason. One of the teams he has been repeatedly linked to is the New York Giants. This makes sense because their current starter Daniel Jones hasn't been effective and could use some competition during the offseason. Trubisky is perfect because he could also use the competition and an extra chance to prove himself.

Quick note on a QB not named Wilson or Rodgers: Spoke to a team in the thick of it for a competitive backup QB in free agency, and they have a strong belief that Mitchell Trubisky is going to end up with the New York Giants and competing with Daniel Jones for the starting job.

five first-rounders for brady?

3/2/2022

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians must be so damn tired of talking about nothing but recently retired (maybe) quarterback Tom Brady. But alas, here we go. Arians was pretty adamant that Brady is actually retired and doesn't expect him back, but was also firm that he doesn't plan on trading Brady either, should he want to go to another team. In case that happens, teams should be expected to give up a hell of a lot.

Bruce Arians was asked about trading Brady and what it would take. “Five No. 1’s.”

— Rick Stroud (@NFLSTROUD) March 1, 2022
  • Speaking of trading your star QB, get a load of this bullshit from Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst. When asked if he was hearing from other NFL teams regarding a trade for Aaron Rodgers, Gutekunst denied everything. Solid strategy, given the fact that they've made it clear they want him back on a short-term deal. No one is buying this, right?

Asked #Packers GM Brian Gutekunst how many GMs had nudged him to ask the price for QB Aaron Rodgers or told him to keep them in mind if he decides on a trade. “Not a one,” he said. Really? Not one? “Not one.”

— Tom Silverstein (@TomSilverstein) March 1, 2022
  • The New York Giants were probably the worst team in the NFL last season, and things aren't looking much better. The answer to their problems probably isn't getting rid of their best player, but star running back Saquon Barkley does deserve better. New GM Joe Shoen discussed potentially trading Barkley this offseason and didn't rule it out.

Asked Joe Schoen how open is he to a trade for some of his better players, specifically Saquon Barkley:

“I’m open to everything…”

Said he’s willing to listen to pretty much anything. They have to make some difficult decisions on guys which will be coming “soon.”

  • Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver (and rookie of the year) Ja'Marr Chase had the last laugh when Les Miles questioned his potential. Chase undoubtedly used this slight to motivate him throughout his college career and into the NFL. I think it's safe to say he's shown him so far.

Asked Ja'Marr Chase about one of his biggest motivators growing up:

"Les Miles told me I couldn’t play receiver when I was coming out of high school." #Bengals @fox19

  • The New York Giants were the worst team in the NFL this season, and they have a big question at the quarterback position. Unfortunately, they are set on sticking with Daniel Jones, who has to come back from sucking and a neck injury. Owner John Mara says one quarterback door can be closed, though: They're not going to be acquiring Deshaun Watson, despite a recent report that Watson was interesting in coming to New York.

Wow. John Mara: “We are not trading for DeShaun Watson.”

  • Again, I love this trend. Buffalo Bills fans have famously donated to various causes related to their team. But this time, it was Kansas City Chiefs fans who donated. Chiefs fans donated $13 to Josh Allen's charity after winning this past weekend in the divisional round. They have raised almost $200,000 to the charity, which benefits Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo.

An incredible $178,000 from over 9800 donors has been donated in just over 24 hours from #ChiefsKingdom Thank you all! These donations help the ongoing need and ensure our team has the tools, training and programs to care for the kids in WNY ❤️ pic.twitter.com/wWXvDXxjXF

  • A report came out on Thursday morning that Baker Mayfield and his head coach Kevin Stefanski didn't get along and then insinuated that to resolve those differences, Mayfield could request a trade from the Cleveland Browns this offseason. Wild stuff. But Mayfield isn't a fan of people putting words (that either he did or did not say) in his mouth. I love when QBs speak their mind. We rarely hear their side of the story because they just don't want to get involved or cause drama.

Clickbait. You and many other Cleveland local media continue to be drama stirring reporters with no sources or facts. Don’t put words in my mouth so you can put food on your table. I’m not your puppet. https://t.co/MfHnqWk65s

  • As a palate cleanser, here is Green Bay Packers star wide receiver Davante Adams sharing what it takes to succeed in the NFL, or in life in general.

  • Joe Burrow is officially the coolest person to walk the planet. This was his text to his backup quarterback Brandon Allen to let him know he'd be starting in Week 18 while Burrow rests for the postseason.

The most Joe Burrow thing I’ve ever head. #Bengals backup QB Brandon Allen says Joe Burrow texted him on Tuesday and leaked the news before Zac Taylor called him and texted him to say:

“Tag, you’re in.”

And that’s how Allen found out he was the starting QB

  • And I'll leave you with this, because it's just the greatest thing I've ever seen. I don't think further comment needs to be had. Amazing.

  • This is interesting from Cleveland Browns center and NFLPA President JC Tretter. The NFL had originally wanted to cancel the games that were eventually moved, meaning neither team would have gotten paid for them. Tretter made sure to fight for them to be moved. Do we still want to complain about how the "NFL coddles the Browns" or no?

JC Tretter says the NFL wanted to cancel all 3 postponed games last week, which would have meant no players would have been paid. Tretter heads the players union and fought for postponement based on that, not competitive balance.

  • New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is shut down for the rest of this season, but a decision is looming for 2022. When asked about the future, this was his response. And the picture is just a perfect representation.

Daniel Jones on if #Giants want him as 2022 QB: “I’ve spoken to Joe & we’ve had conversations about that. But I think there’s things I need to improve on. There’s things he expects me to improve on & I understand that. I obviously take that very seriously. So that’s my approach.”

— Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) December 22, 2021
  • Classic John Harbaugh was on display on Wednesday. When asked about the star of his team's availability for this weekend, he responded with basically a shrug. I know he's had to answer way more questions about injuries than anyone else this season, but this is annoying.

John Harbaugh when asked about an update on Lamar Jackson (ankle): "I don't have any updates on that. That's wait and see for all those guys. Every single guy you're going to ask me about is all going to be day by day. We'll just see where they're at as we go."

  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed running back Le'Veon Bell earlier this week. Bell had some interesting ideas of what he would have done had the Bucs not called him.

THE DROP-BACK: Wednesday November 24 - Should brady be penalized for this slide?

11/24/2021

buccaneers

We all remember when Tom Brady was fined $10,000 for sliding and purposefully ("accidentally," according to him) kicked Ed Reed in the leg, right? Well, it appears he may have done it again. Brady slid during a scramble in Monday night's Tampa Bay Buccaneers win against the New York Giants, and as he slid, Brady raised his leg right into Giants DB Xavier McKinney's lower leg. So, what do you think? Accident or on purpose?

THAT'S OUR QB! □

Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens were able to squeeze out a win on Sunday without starting quarterback Lamar Jackson, and it looks like he'll be well enough to be under-center next week. Head coach John Harbaugh said, "he felt good today. I don't know how good. But he feels much better today, from what I was told." So have we figured out WHY the Ravens made him travel to Chicago in the first place? Let me know.

vikings

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kirk Cousins has been the main reason for the Minnesota Vikings' success this season. (Before you ask me if 5-5 is considered "successful," they're currently in playoff position and have had back-t0-back wins. Baby steps.) Cousins has been taking more shots downfield, and it's been paying off. Of course, head coach Mike Zimmer wouldn't mind if Cousins continued to do more of that. "I want Cousins to keep doing it like he's doing it. He can't second-guess himself."

Washington

This season, Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke was thrown to the wolves as the starter after Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured. Through an up-and-down season, Heinicke is currently on the "up" trajectory. Head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged that Heinicke has continued to grow throughout the season. "What we want from that position is a guy that can manage it and then make plays when he needs to. And this is what this guy does. He's smart. He understands the game. He's just a guy that, again, has only had 11 starts, and we'll see how it continues to go." Heinicke is totally gonna trick Washington into not drafting a quarterback again, isn't he?

packers

After Aaron Rodgers' COVID fiasco, there's another roadblock in his way: an injured toe. Rodgers has said it's a little worse than turf toe, and it's pretty painful. However, Rodgers plans to play through the injury, as it's likely his last season with the Green Bay Packers.

How's the toe Aaron??

"It's worse than turf toe & it's definitely not going away.. I've already talked enough about my medical status on this show" □□ ~@AaronRodgers12#PatMcAfeeShowLIVE pic.twitter.com/GSt30ttahR

jets

Heavy sigh. On Tuesday, the New York Jets announced that rookie QB Zach Wilson was cleared to start on Sunday against the Houston Texans. That's good for them because they don't have many other options. After being listed as close contacts, the Jets put both Joe Flacco and Mike White on the COVID-19 reserve list. Don't say it.

The Jets have placed QB Joe Flacco and QB Mike White on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

giants

After being knocked out (literally) of the game last weekend, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones returned to practice on Thursday on a limited basis. Jones' status is still up in the air, as he is currently progressing through concussion protocol and has to be cleared in order to play this week.

Giants HC Joe Judge is on a call with LA media this morning (“LMK what you guys need to get the job done”).

On QB Daniel Jones: Progressing thru concussion protocol and will participate in non-contact practice today.

On QB Stafford: “There’s really not a throw he can’t make.”

STEELERS

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers are struggling this season, but they finally snapped their losing streak last week. Could this be the spark they need to keep things going? Roethlisberger says they still have a lot of work to do. "We're not by any means going to sit here and say we're fixed; we're this great offense. We're not there yet. We still have a long way to go." Well, at least he's aware.
