Week Eight Highlights

10/31/2022

Yes, Matt Canada called this play.

The Pittsburgh Steelers ran the 'Philly Special' against the Philadelphia Eagles, because of course they did. It involved wide receiver Chase Claypool throwing a touchdown to fullback (!!) Derek Watt for six in the first quarter.

The Steelers ended up losing this game (badly) and the Eagles remain the only undefeated team in the league.

.@ChaseClaypool TD PASS to @DerekWatt34 on 4th and Goal!

Hopkins hands are incredible pic.twitter.com/TxhyZf6lY8

— Barstool Sportsbook (@BSSportsbook) October 30, 2022
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has the touchdown catch of the year so far with this one-handed grab from QB Kyler Murray.

Hopkins is coming off of a six-game PED suspension and is still one of the best in the league made sure to stick his hand out while being smothered by Minnesota Vikings defenders.

The Cardinals went on to lose this game, 34-26.
No one wants to win the NFC South.

In a close game, the Carolina Panthers had wide receiver DJ Moore line up to receive a Hail Mary attempt from QB PJ Walker, which was caught.

But before they had a chance to get excited, Moore ripped off his helmet, which is a (lame) penalty for excessive celebration, generating a flag by the refs.

The kick was missed, sending the game into overtime.

The Atlanta Falcons ended up winning this one by pure magic, 37-34.

The newest San Francisco 49er made a splash in a big way on Sunday.

Running back Christian McCaffrey blessed us with some trickery and threw a touchdown to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to tie up the game.

More QB News:

  • The Denver Broncos were icing Russell Wilson's shoulder between drives. Wilson originally injured his shoulder in Week Four.
  • The New York Jets chose Mike White as the backup QB in Week Eight, as Joe Flacco and Chris Streveler were inactive.
  • Philadelphia Eagles backup Gardner Minshew replaced starter Jalen Hurts in the fourth quarter, as they were up 35-13.
  • New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore was asked about his chemistry with QB Zach Wilson and his response was, "I don't know, I don't get the ball." MAJOR Eyeball Emojis here ?

  • The Las Vegas Raiders were shut out, as they lost 24-0 to the New Orleans Saints in a mid-off between Derek Carr and Andy Dalton. Carr said the typical shit, "we need to be better and look within," following the beatdown.

"This is embarrassing...that should never happen."

The Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins were scheduled to have two days of joint practices ahead of Saturday's final preseason matchup. Not anymore! Due to a stomach bug and players barfing everywhere, Thursday's practice has been canceled, and teams will meet virtually.

The #Dolphins, who canceled their joint practice with the #Eagles today, are dealing with a stomach bug, sources say. Bunch of players sick, vomiting overnight.

  • Free agent center JC Tretter announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday. Tretter most recently played for the Cleveland Browns and was the NFL Players' Association president.

  • Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday's practice that appears worse than initially thought. Smith is believed to have an avulsion fracture in his knee, which will require him to miss up until December, but more likely the 2022 season.

#Cowboys standout LT Tyron Smith actually suffered an avulsion fracture of the knee, meaning the hamstring tendon that sits at the back of the knee pulled off the bone and he needs surgery, sources say. If he’s back at all, it’ll be December. A tough loss.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 25, 2022
  • Rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks was a no-go for Thursday's Tennessee Titans practice after leaving midday on Wednesday. It's unclear what this specific injury is, but Burks has been in and out of practices all offseason with different ailments.

No Treylon Burks for the #Titans today.

— TURRON DAVENPORT (@TDavenport_NFL) August 25, 2022
  • Running back Antonio Gibson appears to be the Washington Commanders' first choice for kick returner in 2022. Gibson has taken reps in this role and a regular backfield role.

Ron Rivera on if RB Antonio Gibson will be the team's top kick returner this season: "You still need to see some more stuff, but you know, I think he is. I do. I think he's done a nice job.”

— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) August 25, 2022
  • Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London remains out of practice with a knee injury. Head coach Arthur Smith stated almost two weeks ago that they did not consider it a "long-term" injury, but it's getting there, yes?

Falcons players I don’t see in early part of practice (perhaps they show up later):

torn achilles for browns' jakeem grant

The Cleveland Browns placed wide receiver and kick returner Jakeem Grant on injured reserve on Wednesday, ending his season. Grant is confirmed to have torn his Achilles after being carted off the field during Tuesday's training camp practice.

Tests confirmed a torn Achilles for #Browns WR/KR Jakeem Grant, per source. Suffered injury in Tuesday's practice. Tough deal for Grant, who was set to play a big role for Cleveland as a free agent addition who was having a strong camp.

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) August 10, 2022
Grant was likely to take up the returner role with the Browns this season, along with some duties on offense. He recently signed a contract extension in March of this year.

more headlines:

  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got a scare during Wednesday's training camp practice when center Robert Hainsey was carted off with what was originally thought to be a leg injury. Rewind to about a mere week ago when the team lost their starting center, Ryan Jensen, in the same way. Luckily, Hainsey was just carted off due to cramps and should be just fine. You know Tom Brady was sweating bullets.

GREAT news for the Bucs from a source right now: Hainsey was experiencing bad cramps when he was carted off. What looked like a real scare out here… was nothing more than the Florida heat. https://t.co/oHXknEpddm

— Jeff Darlington (@JeffDarlington) August 10, 2022
  •  Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith missed his fifth straight practice on Wednesday due to a groin injury. It's safe to say we won't see him in this week's preseason game, but this should be something to watch going forward. Especially if you play the fantasy football -- groin injuries can linger.

Nick Sirianni says DeVonta Smith (groin) is still day-to-day. Won’t practice today. His 5th straight practice missed #Eagles

— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) August 10, 2022
  • Speaking of injuries to watch... Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon didn't practice on Wednesday due to a foot situation (injury? who knows). Head coach Nathaniel Hackett said it was being evaluated and didn't say much else.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said after Wednesday’s practice RB Melvin Gordon III didn’t practice due to foot injury… said it’s being evaluated.

Mekhi Becton likely out for the season

8/10/2022

Picture

New York Jets right tackle Mekhi Becton is likely out for the 2022 season, after suffering a knee injury during Monday's practice. The team is calling it a fractured knee cap, which sounds terribly painful (and terribly confusing as to why they weren't initially concerned yesterday when it occurred).

#Jets OT Mekhi Becton has suffered an avulsion fracture of the right knee cap, per me and @MikeGarafolo. He’s seeing a surgeon tomorrow, but likely is out for the year. Brutal.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 9, 2022
Becton was a first-round pick in 2020 and hasn't had much good luck since then. Becton missed the 2021 season after suffering a knee injury in the Jets' season opener.

more headlines:

  • Chicago Bears LB Roquan Smith wants a trade from the team, and honestly, who can blame him? Smith is designated to play this season under his fifth-year option, and it sounds like he doesn't seem valued by the team. The Bears are determined to keep him around, but this seems like it'll get messy before it gets better.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 9, 2022
  • New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Jameis Winston injured his foot in Monday's practice and while many said "not to panic," Winston is set to miss a few days and sit out the team's preseason opener. Is that Jimmy Garoppolo's music?

I’m told the injury to Jameis Winston’s foot is not serious. He is expected to miss a few days of practice because of it and won’t play in the preseason opener vs, Houston on Saturday.

— Jeff Duncan (@JeffDuncan_) August 9, 2022
  • Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has been dealing with some elbow discomfort for a while (don't we all) and is set to have a quick "clean-up" surgery on it. It's unknown whether Kelce will be ready for Week One.

#eagles center Jason Kelce is going to have surgery on his elbow. The team states that after trying to work through the discomfort in his elbow, it was agreed that a routine cleanout was the best course and would also allow for a speedy recovery

— James Palmer (@JamesPalmerTV) August 9, 2022
  • Cleveland Browns wide receiver and kick returner Jakeem Grant tore his Achilles tendon during one-on-one drills in Tuesday's practice. He was a Pro Bowl last season and was voted an All-Pro the past two seasons. A huge loss for Cleveland.

Sources: #Browns All-Pro returner and receiver Jakeem Grant is feared to have torn his Achilles in practice today. He’ll have tests to confirm, but would be an incredibly unfortunate reality.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 9, 2022
  • Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed on Tuesday that he signed a contract extension with the team, but just... hadn't announced it yet (ESPN like, 'accidentally' announced it during their editorial profile with the Super Bowl-winning head coach), so, sorry to blow your cover, I guess?

#Rams coach Sean McVay tells reporters that he did receive a new contract. He added that the team will wait to announce it until the new deal for GM Les Snead is done.

a new home for james bradberry

  • Cornerback James Bradberry signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bradberry and Darius Slay will team up at the position. Bradberry is coming off of a down year in 2021, but if he can get back to his 2020 form, the Eagles will be difficult to pass against this season.

Sources: Former #Giants Pro Bowl CB James Bradberry has agreed to terms with the #Eagles on a 1-year deal for $10M. A big-time post-draft addition, as Bradberry lands in a perfect spot.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 18, 2022
  • After undergoing knee surgery in the offseason, Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee is recovering. He missed the Super Bowl due to a sprained MCL sustained during the NFC title game. Despite some light on-field activity this spring, Higbee's rehab process is ongoing and is expected to be ready for the 2022 season.

Higbee also said he did have surgery, FWIW. Says he’s in a good place now. https://t.co/7TMjQmxhvG

deebo wants a trade

4/21/2022

  • Versatile wide receiver Deebo Samuel has informed the San Francisco 49ers that he wants a trade. This has been brewing for quite some time, from deleting all traces of the Niners from his social media to his brother posting a cryptic Facebook status about the situation. Samuel is up for an extension, and talks have stalled to the point where he isn't even willing to discuss it with the team. Samuel is one of those players who will instantly make any roster better, but it is up to the Niners to grant his trade request.

Breaking News: I just spoke to wide receiver Deebo Samuel — and he told me that he has asked the 49ers to trade him.

He did not want to discuss specific reasons behind his request, but he has indeed let the 49ers know his desire to leave the organization. More to come.

  • Michigan pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson has long been rumored to be the first pick in this year's NFL Draft. Hutchinson is convinced of this based on his interactions with the team picking at number one - none other than the Jacksonville Jaguars. This could be just cold, hard truth, or a potential smokescreen, perhaps to entice a team who may want Hutchinson to trade up. We'll find out in a week.

Spoke with a source close to Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson yesterday who told me Hutchinson believes he'll be Jacksonville's pick at No. 1 overall "based on his interactions with them."

— Thor Nystrom (@thorku) April 20, 2022
  • New York Giants' new head coach Brian Daboll spoke to the media on Wednesday, where he confirmed that wide receiver Kadarius Toney was not in attendance at voluntary minicamp. Daboll also stated that Toney had not yet received a playbook. New York hasn't had any virtual sessions, so players' first glimpse at the new playbook would be at these voluntary workouts (I mean, it kinda seems like that's your own fault, yes?). Toney previously skipped these workouts due to not signing his rookie deal. Toney has a high ceiling talent-wise but has to get on the field first. And a playbook seems conducive to doing that.

Giants HC Brian Daboll says Kadarius Toney is not here at voluntary pre-draft minicamp. Says Toney hasn’t received the playbook yet, because they haven’t done anything virtual. Daboll is careful to remind this is a voluntary camp. But given Toney’s history, this is noteworthy. pic.twitter.com/yVnYpd7S92

  • When asked if the Philadelphia Eagles could draft a quarterback in this year's draft, general manager Howie Roseman is again trying to convince us that they are sold on current starter Jalen Hurts. However, their move to acquire a first-round pick for 2023's draft from the New Orleans Saints, plus their meetings with just about every top QB prospect in this year's draft, have me thinking otherwise. Translation: This is likely Hurts' last chance to prove himself as Philly's starter.

Howie Roseman says the #Eagles are excited about Jalen Hurts. Also says they are going to support him and hope he has a great career in Philadelphia.

an "adult" at quarterback

  • Baker Mayfield sent out a message to the city of Cleveland and Browns fans recently, while his future is currently unknown with the team. The team is openly courting Deshaun Watson, meaning Mayfield will be the odd man out. A report surfaced via ESPN that the Browns could be giving Mayfield the ol' heave-ho anyway because they want an "adult" at QB. Ouch to the nth degree.

  • SPEAKING OF ADULTS AT QB. The New York Jets re-signed Joe Flacco to a one-year contract worth $3.5 million, with the opportunity for incentives. INCENTIVES? Meaning the Jets are planning for Flacco to start at one point in 2022? ? Sign me up. A reminder that Flacco played in two games last season while rookie Zach Wilson was injured and threw zero interceptions. Just saying.

  • According to reports, Tennessee Titans wide receiver Julio Jones was released after one season. Due to injury, Jones missed seven games last season and only recorded 31 receptions in 2021. The former Atlanta Falcon has seen a decrease in production in recent years. Jones now faces being picked up by another team, and that team faces the decision that if they sign him, they may not get an entire season out of him.

  • Multiple teams have submitted proposals to alter the NFL's overtime rules after the Buffalo Bills weren't given a chance to answer the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs. The Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles submitted the same tweak that stated both teams should get to touch the ball in overtime. In contrast, the Tennessee Titans presented that the game would only be over if the first team scored a touchdown and the two-point conversion. Of course, the overtime rules will always be a little fucked, but both of these proposals are better than the current rules.

pre-scouting combine nonsense

  • The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine is underway, and teams are back on their bullshit. UNC quarterback Sam Howell revealed that the Philadelphia Eagles had him shoot on a small basketball hoop. This exercise is pretty harmless compared to some of the things I've heard teams discuss with players, but it's still pretty stupid, no?

#UNC QB Sam Howell was asked if he’s had any strange questions from teams. No strange questions, but said the Eagles had him shoot a basketball on a mini hoop.

  • Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim signed extensions on Wednesday, which is quite head-scratching if you remember Kyler Murray's very public want for a new deal earlier this week. Kingsbury and Murray even have the same agent. So how will this affect Murray getting a deal? Who knows, but I'm getting my popcorn ready.

We have reached agreements on contract extensions with GM Steve Keim and Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury.

  • Liberty quarterback Malik Willis is slated to be one of the top QBs in this year's NFL Draft. Sometimes we worry about how these young guys will translate from college to the NFL, but it seems like Willis has this under control. Willis was asked how he manages to keep his focus and gave this perfect answer. Do we have a new QB to stan?

Liberty’s Malik Willis: “Everybody’s going to have an opinion of you but if you care about their opinions, you’re not going to be happy. I want to be happy, so I’m going to worry about what I can control.” pic.twitter.com/Tsna7EWwwS

  • Not every day you see an NFL GM cry at the Combine. Tennessee Titans GM Jon Robinson was asked about his team and how the season ended. Apparently, he had some strong feelings about it. I'm all for men showing emotion. Let it out!

Asked what he could could have done better last year, Jon Robinson started to answer and then went here. #Titans pic.twitter.com/4iBQwGH88l

  • His buddy Tom Brady announced his retirement, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski hasn't made his decision yet on if he'll play next season. If he does decide to play for another year, the Buffalo Bills are one of the teams interested. Dawson Knox had a great season last year, but the addition of Gronk would make the Bills' offense even more explosive.

Bills interested in adding Rob Gronkowski as another weapon for Josh Allen https://t.co/HvcI9oIKus

  • And I'll leave you with a feel-good story, the best kind of story. San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch spoke during the Combine and was asked about the newly hired Miami Dolphins coach, ex-Niners offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Lynch praised McDaniel up and down and didn't know McDaniel was listening. He had quite a reaction.

Jalen hurts has more balls than Dan snyder

  • After Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Football Team suffered their latest franchise embarrassment. Jalen Hurts was involved, as a railing collapsed as he was walking through the tunnel, and it and about a dozen fans almost landed right on top of him. WFT then proceeded to fix the problem in the cheapest way possible. Anyways, Hurts is one of the many people who want Washington to be held accountable for their actions, for once, and he sent a letter to them and the NFL asking them to take action.

#Eagles QB Jalen Hurts sent a letter today to the Washington Football Team and the NFL, asking what follow-up action will be taken after a “near-tragic incident” when a railing collapsed Sunday at FedEx Field. • On Monday night, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played his presumed last home game at Heinz Field. While he hasn't 100% announced his retirement, his body language (i.e., barely able to move) and his play on the field (i.e., it's dwindling) all but confirmed this. Big Ben is a certified a-hole, but I'm not gonna lie; this was kind of cool to see. I will miss beating this guy, for nostalgia's sake, but I won't miss much else.

  • This is interesting from Cleveland Browns center and NFLPA President JC Tretter. The NFL had originally wanted to cancel the games that were eventually moved, meaning neither team would have gotten paid for them. Tretter made sure to fight for them to be moved. Do we still want to complain about how the "NFL coddles the Browns" or no?

JC Tretter says the NFL wanted to cancel all 3 postponed games last week, which would have meant no players would have been paid. Tretter heads the players union and fought for postponement based on that, not competitive balance.

  • New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is shut down for the rest of this season, but a decision is looming for 2022. When asked about the future, this was his response. And the picture is just a perfect representation.

Daniel Jones on if #Giants want him as 2022 QB: “I’ve spoken to Joe & we’ve had conversations about that. But I think there’s things I need to improve on. There’s things he expects me to improve on & I understand that. I obviously take that very seriously. So that’s my approach.”

  • Classic John Harbaugh was on display on Wednesday. When asked about the star of his team's availability for this weekend, he responded with basically a shrug. I know he's had to answer way more questions about injuries than anyone else this season, but this is annoying.

John Harbaugh when asked about an update on Lamar Jackson (ankle): "I don't have any updates on that. That's wait and see for all those guys. Every single guy you're going to ask me about is all going to be day by day. We'll just see where they're at as we go."
