deandre hopkins thinks he's the best wr in the nfl
New Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins wasn't quiet about how he thinks he stacks up against the top receivers in the NFL. Hopkins mentioned that if he played with a top quarterback like Drew Brees (he also mentioned Matt Ryan, but we all know how I feel on that front), his numbers would be much higher.
Any top receiver with a top quarterback will obviously get more production as a whole. Any quarterback without a top WR won't have as good numbers. Both can be true.
But, Hopkins isn't wrong here. With his new quarterback Kyler Murray set to be the next young guy to have a monster sophomore year, I'm willing to bet Hopkins' numbers tick onwards and upwards.
Carlos hyde signs with seahawks
Veteran running back Carlos Hyde agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks last week, and the team made it official on Thursday.
Hyde will join Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny -- not a bad bunch for Russell Wilson.
panthers sign cornerback eli apple
The Carolina Panthers and cornerback Eli Apple agreed to a one-year contract on Thursday. The former New Orleans Saint will stay in the division.
jadeveon clowney turned down offer from browns
The Cleveland Browns put the biggest offer down for current free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He then, promptly, turned it down on Wednesday.
But seriously, what is this dude waiting for? I'm all for players holding onto themselves, and going after what they think they're worth, but it's getting down to the wire here.
pa Governor gives all-clear for training camps
The Philadelphia Eagles (and I guess the Steelers too) should be able to hold training camp, as Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf mentioned on Wednesday.
One of my favorite phrases to use, "BARRING A SETBACK," is useful here.
Teams will be expected to adhere to all safety protocols, of course, and no fans or spectators are permitted at this time to watch practices or scrimmages.
We are on the way to having sports, but my fingers are still crossed very tightly.
Russell wilson will co-host the remote espys.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will join WNBA champion Sue Bird and soccer player Megan Rapinoe in hosting the 2020 ESPYs.
The show will air on June 21st on ESPN, and will be hosted remotely. Instead of its usual athlete highlights, the show will highlight acts of heroism within sports. Something we all need right now.
the dolphins are hoping to score at the drive-in
Ha. Hahahaha. The Miami Dolphins are turing their stadium into a drive-in movie theater. No, really.
There is no open date scheduled as of right now, but this is a great idea since the team can't play yet. Not a bad way to make some cash either. Hard Rock Stadium can hold 230 cars, but my question is -- how do they drive in? Is there an entrance? What?
Ben roethlisberger is officially back
Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger shared a video of himself throwing a football again! Miraculous! After missing basically the entire 2019 season, Roethlisberger wanted to show he was back in action, by throwing with his teammates.
Roethlisberger had stated earlier this offseason that he wouldn't shave his beard until he could throw a football again, and then promptly shaved his beard off, once again looking like a giant toddler. All jokes aside, don't sleep on the Steelers this season. It pains me to say it, but it's the truth.
patrick chung signs extension with new england
The New England Patriots and safety Patrick Chung agreed on an extension on Wednesday. The deal is a $3 million deal, where he will be with the team through 2023.
No one really talks about this guy, but like the tweet says, he's reliable as hell. He's also been in the league for forever basically.
saints say taysom hill is the guy after drew brees
Just like I told you all about a month ago, the New Orleans Saints already have their quarterback back-up plan for when current starter and future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees eventually retires. That guy is Taysom Hill.
Glazer also went on to say that he's a "bigger Lamar Jackson," which for the record I do not agree with at this point in time.
There's a lot of questions on whether, at 30, Hill is really a useable option for the Saints once Brees does call it quits, and why wouldn't he be? I think (and this is purely my speculation, I don't have any 'inside info' on this) the team banked on Brees retiring this past year, and now have to wait another to utilize Hill in his role. In the meantime, he's a playmaker willing to help in any way he can. Winning on both ends.
cody latimer arrested on firearms charges
Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer was arrested over the weekend on charges of illegal discharge of a firearm and prohibited use of a firearm.
Latimer spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos, before signing with the New York Giants in 2017. Latimer most recently signed with the Redskins in March.
ed oliver arrested on dui and weapons charges
That brings it to four NFL players being arrested over the weekend (as of the time I'm writing this, anyway), and rounding out the quartet is Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Oliver was arrested on Saturday night in Houston on charges of driving while intoxicated and weapon possession.
The ability of NFL players to get arrested for these things is mind-blowing (during a global pandemic, no less). Get a ride! Call an Uber! Or, better yet, stay home! Everyone makes mistakes, I know I've made my fair share, but be smarter...
the los angeles rams unveil their new uniforms
After revealing a new logo a few months ago, the Los Angeles Rams unveiled their new uniforms earlier this week. They have gradient numbers and a metallic helmet.
These hurt my eyes. The helmet isn't that bad, but the uniforms look like a children's clothing line. I really do not get it. But these are the things we get mad at in April-May.
jalen hurts will wear no. 2 for eagles
The 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts will wear No. 2 for the Philadelphia Eagles this season, according to the list the team released on Thursday.
[Insert joke about how he's the number 2 quarterback until only Carson Wentz gets hurt again.]
New York Giants CB Deandre Baker and Seattle Seahawks CB Quinton Dunbar currently have warrants out for their arrest, clearly rounding out the NFL offseason nicely. The two are being charged for armed robbery with a firearm while attending a cookout and robbing other guests. The incident occurred on May 13.
Not only are you dumb as rocks to rob a cookout during a global pandemic, you are doubly dumb to rob someone as a millionaire yourself, and to turn a contract year into jail time. Idiotic. And peak offseason.
tom brady responds to reports of rift with josh mcdaniels
Rumors were floating around that former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had some trouble in paradise, citing that as a potential reason why Brady scooted down to Florida. Brady quickly squashed the rumor, explaining that him and McDaniels were "brothers for life."
Any possible way to talk about Brady, we'll be sure to do it, right?
prince amukamara signs with raiders
Cornerback Prince Amukamara was with the Chicago Bears a long time -- now he's moving on to the Las Vegas Raiders. The two agreed to a deal on Tuesday.
Love this move. This is a case of an underrated corner who gives the team insurance if the younger guys aren't ready to start.
Booger McFarland is out at monday night football
Announcers are SUCH a big deal to everyone it seems. PRO TIP: Learn to tune them out like me, and you won't even notice.
Anyway, it was announced over the weekend that Booger McFarland and Joe Tessitore will not be returning to the Monday Night Football booth this coming season. This is my favorite Booger moment.
Richard SEYMOUR makes the Patriots Hall of Fame
Richard Seymour became the 30th member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame on Monday.
Seymour is the seventh player to enter the Hall as a third-time Super Bowl champion.
could carlos hyde be going to philly?
After spending last season with the Houston Texans, running back Carlos Hyde is a free agent, looking for a new home. Could that home be with the Philadelphia Eagles?
titans ceo steve underwood is retiring
Steve Underwood, the Tennessee Titans CEO and President, announced his retirement on Friday. But that's not why he made headlines this weekend. This is why:
I know y'all see that.
saints release larry warford
The New Orleans Saints released guard Larry Warford on Friday, making him a free agent. The move saved the Saints over $7 million against the salary cap.
They say that you can tell how good an offensive lineman is by how little you hear their name being called, and this is true here. Warford should be one of the top free agents currently available, and I'd imagine he'll get snatched up quick.
But first... we can't talk about that, until we talk about this:
Earl Thomas' own personal lifetime movie
Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas isn't having a good time lately. First he gets man-handled by Derrick Henry, and now he gets HELD UP AT GUN POINT BY HIS WIFE FOR CHEATING.
To paraphrase -- Thomas' wife, Nina, tracked his Snapchat location (who even has Snapchat anymore - and if you're gonna cheat, turn it off), and found him and his brother in bed in an Airbnb with other women. She then held him at gunpoint and threatened him and was later arrested. You can read the whole story here, and I highly highly recommend doing that.
Before you speculate about the Ravens or the NFL punishing him in any way, Thomas really didn't do anything wrong here except cheat. And you can't get suspended or anything for that. The only thing he did wrong was not notify the team after this happened (April 13 -- the team found out about it when everyone else did). That could be handled internally. Unless there's something we really don't know about, Thomas should not face any disciplinary action.
the 2020 season will open with texans @ chiefs
We hope so, anyway. The 2020 NFL season will kick off on Thursday, September 10, with the Houston Texans playing the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, can we please stay home and not make bad decisions so we can watch this please? It's all I ask, and I don't ask for much.
brady vs. brees in week one hits different
Another high-profile matchup for Week One -- the Tampa Bay Bucs take on the New Orleans Saints. Which means, we get Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees. AND they're in the same division, which means we get this twice.
Brady and Brees have only met five times prior to this season.
While most people have those weird, automated email newsletters, my email list gets an email straight from me every week >>>>
