Another idiotic call on Clay Matthews - Imagine that

The NFL is doing this again. It's like we have a case of that deja-vu stuff. This was called roughing the passer during Sunday's game:

Matthews went on to state (and I agree) that the NFL's penalties were "out of control."

“Obviously, I don’t agree with it again. Whereas last week I thought I hit the quarterback correctly, head was to the side again, wrapped him up and you see as soon as I hit the ground you see me try and pull my hands out. Obviously when you’re tackling a guy from the front, you’re going to land on him. I understand the spirit of the rule. I said that [in] weeks prior. When you have a hit like that, that’s a football play. I even went up to Alex Smith after the game and asked him, ‘What do you think? What can I do differently?’ Because that’s a football play. Like I said last week, the NFL’s going to come back and say I put my body on him. But that’s a football play. I hit him from the front, got my head across, wrapped up. I’ve never heard of anybody tackling somebody without any hands. When he gives himself up as soon as you hit him, your body weight’s going to go on him. I think we’re looking for the hits that took Aaron out last year, that little extra. If I wanted to hurt him, I could’ve. I could have put some extra on him, but that’s football. I don’t know. I really don’t know. Unfortunately, this league is going in a direction I think a lot of people don’t like. I think they’re getting soft. The only thing hard about this league is the fines that they levy down on guys like me who play the game hard. I don’t know. I’m just going to keep playing hard. Maybe now pass rushers and guys getting after the quarterback, you just have to attack the ball. I’ve been playing this game for over 20 years. That’s how you tackle. So we’ll see. I mean, something’s got to change because the league’s not. . . . Like I said last week, these are big plays. So disappointed. I tried to change from last week and still get the flag. It’s unfortunate.”

buzz-worthy:

  • The San Francisco 49ers may have lost their QB -- a moment of silence for Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy will have an MRI, but the Niners are expecting the worst - he was carted off the field with a non-contact injury, which is basically a death sentence in the football world. RIP
  • The Arizona Cardinals FINALLY put QB Josh Rosen in the game (even though they set him up to fail by putting him in while they were already down but that's besides the point). Coach Steve Wilks said he felt like they "needed a spark."
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly listening to trade offers for RB Le'Veon Bell. Bell has made it clear he's not happy with the team, and frankly, neither am I.
  • The New Orleans Saints beat the Falcons in overtime, despite a supposed "great day" for QB Matt Ryan. Sucks to suck.
  • Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz made his return to the football field on Sunday. Along with a win against the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz was just happy to be here.
  • Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is expected to be named the starter on Monday. What could go wrong?
  • Los Angeles Rams CB Marcus Peters left Sunday's game in the first half. He is said to have a calf strain, not an Achilles injury, like the television broadcast reported.
  • Denver Broncos rookie RB Phillip Lindsay (not me), was ejected during Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens for throwing hands. Lindsay said, "It's not in my character. That's not who I am."
  • PAT. MAHOMES. The Goat. 13 touchdowns and 0 interceptions so far, should I say more?
  • The New England Patriots nearly tried to trade TE Rob Gronkowski  to the Detroit Lions and then Gronk basically said, "Nah, I'd rather retire than play with those bums," and that was that. Read more details here if that wasn't enough for ya.

what I'm reading today:

  • Tiger Woods a winner again for first time since 2013 (AP News)
  • Tennessee coach sends player to locker room for refusing to enter game (Fox News)
  • Cowboys QB Dak Prescott inspired by artist born without arms (YouTube - NFL Sunday Countdown)
  • The Colts don't trust Andrew Luck to throw a Hail Mary (Deadspin)
  • Giants have had enough of Ereck Flowers (NY Post)

last word:

This is so damn unfair to Josh Rosen.
