Welp. They finally did it. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named Baker Mayfield their starting quarterback for the 2023 season. He has beaten out the almighty Kyle Trask.

The #Bucs are going with Baker Mayfield as their starting QB, coach Todd Bowles announced.

Head coach Todd Bowles named Mayfield the starter in Tuesday's press conference, stating experience and understanding of the playbook as reasons for getting the starting nod.

Bowles also said Mayfield and most starters will play until about the half in their final preseason game.

more qb news:

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers, and particularly QB Kenny Pickett, has been getting preseason hype as the offense appears to have taken another step forward. But, Pickett says it's time to pump the brakes. "It is preseason, man. Nothing counts, so it is kind of easy to remain motivated because we haven't done anything yet. Everybody understands that." Respect.
  • Rookie quarterback Bryce Young will be starting for the Carolina Panthers come September, but the team still wants him to get a few reps in during preseason. Fine by him. "I trust the coaches wholeheartedly in their approach, what they're doing, the play-calling, everything... They have a plan. Whatever that is, I don't question it. I just go in and try to execute."
  • QB John Wolford returned to practice on Tuesday for the Buccaneers.
  • Anthony Richardson will start for the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night.
  • Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon isn't ready to name a starting quarterback for Week 1. But we know it won't be Kyler Murray. "When we need to name the starters we'll name the starters." The choices are vast - veteran Colt McCoy or rookie Clayton Tune. I'm shaking with anticipation.
  • We'll get our first look at QB Aaron Rodgers in a New York Jets uniform during their last preseason game. While there may be concerns about injuries, head coach Robert Saleh says anything can happen at any time. "You can't coach scared, you can't play scared. You can slip out of your car and have something happen to you. Knock on wood, everyone will be fine."
    • As far as Rodgers goes (he hasn't played in a preseason game since 2018), he says, " I used to enjoy playing in the preseason back in my younger years, just to kind of maybe take that first hit or feel the nerves on the first drive. So, I look forward to being out there."
