good news and bad news for 49ers qbs

On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance told reporters he'd be cleared soon after undergoing two surgeries on his broken ankle. Lance is expected to be a full-go by OTAs. This is good news for the Niners, who are expected to be rid of Jimmy Garoppolo soon and have Brock Purdy out for at least six months.

Speaking of 49ers QBs, rookie Brock Purdy is currently awaiting second opinions on his injured UCL - a repair vs. reconstruction surgery will determine the time he will be able to return to football activities. Purdy told reporters on Tuesday that he will make a final decision soon.

• The Pittsburgh Steelers opened the season with QB Mitch Trubisky before turning to rookie Kenny Pickett in Week Four. It took Pickett a bit to warm up, but he emerged from the 2022 season almost in the postseason and is getting better every week. Tight end Pat Freiermuth agrees. "He was just so much more confident and so much more urgent and knew what he was gonna do. So it took him a little bit to get going, but showed that he's the real deal."
  

• Trevor Lawrence will replace Patrick Mahomes on the Pro Bowl roster, as Mahomes has something more important to take care of.
  
  • Jared Goff will replace Jalen Hurts in the Pro Bowl, as he's also playing in the Super Bowl.
    

• If you weren't sure if the Pro Bowl was a joke yet, you will now. Baltimore Ravens backup QB Tyler Huntley is heading to the Pro Bowl in place of Josh Allen. At the time voting closed, Huntley had thrown zero (as in, none) touchdowns on the season.
  

• It's not a secret that the Buffalo Bills made Josh Allen put it all out on the field. General Manager Brandon Beane says Allen took too many hits in 2022. "The only thing I'd get on to him is he's got too many bruises on him. And we've got to work on taking less hits. That's the only reason I'm ever going to criticize Josh is just take less hits." Maybe that's something Beane can work on this offseason; just saying.
  

• Frank Reich has been through the wringer regarding quarterbacks - it started with Andrew Luck and went downhill. Reich is now with the Carolina Panthers and basically has a blank slate. Reich explained how his time with all different kinds of quarterbacks could help him decide which direction to go with Carolina. "I've had to work with the young, the old, the pocket passer, the guy who moves. And I think even though it wasn't always an ideal scenario, like in Indy having a different quarterback every year, I did learn a lot through it because you're forced to adapt and evolve your offense around different styles of quarterbacks."
  

• Derek Carr will also attend the Pro Bowl, which should be renamed to Mid Bowl, at this point.
  

• The Denver Broncos hired their next head coach Sean Payton, and one of his biggest tasks is to fix Russell Wilson. In 2022, Wilson had one of the worst seasons of his career, and his new coach is already somehow convinced he can be the one to resurrect the old Russell Wilson. "Russell is a hard worker and has played at a high level and won a lot of games in this league. The pressure is on us to put a good run game together and reduce the degree of difficulty on his position. I'm excited about him." Let's ride, indeed.
