After a play call that lost them the game on Sunday, the New York Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
So, it was a terrible play call. We all know this. But that play call pretty much allowed the Jets to lock in the first-round pick in next year's draft (and, potentially lock up highly touted Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson). So, if it was such a horrible play call, why didn't head coach Adam Gase intervene? ..... Even he doesn't know.
The issue with the Jets is this -- the staff, Gase included, has to know they all but done as soon as the season is over. They won't be around for Lawrence, or whoever they choose in the draft. They're not even trying anymore, but they're acting like they care. Williams' firing was a perfect example of that.
