THE DROP-BACK: TUESDAY 08/03 - WENTZ PROBS PT. 2

COLTS

  • Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz went back on his original plan to rest his foot injury, rehab it, and hope it gets better before the season begins -- now he'll have surgery, keeping him out for as many as 12 weeks. Wentz will have surgery in Indianapolis. Not a great start for a guy looking to have a re-emergence.

Colts' QB Carson Wentz is undergoing foot surgery this afternoon in Indianapolis, per source. Dr. David Porter, an orthopedic foot specialist who works with the Colts and is highly regarded, will be performing the surgery.

  • So who's going to run the show while Wentz is out? Apparently, Jacob Eason is. Head coach Frank Reich says Eason is the starter right now, but could that change if the Colts decide to trade for a veteran QB? *cough Nick Foles cough*

“The job is Jacob’s right now … and he’s gotta earn it. But he’s in the driver’s seat.” — Frank Reich on Jacob Eason with Carson Wentz out the next several weeks

Bears

  • Speaking of Foles, who will likely get calls sooner rather than later, he seems to be gassing himself up for that lucky (??) team who calls the Chicago Bears to ask about him. "Listen, I'm 32. I feel great. The version of me right now is much better than the version that played the Super Bowl, I'll tell you that. And I'm confident in that." I don't know about all that, but I admire the sentiment, Nick.
  • As for the other Bears QBs, rookie Justin Fields was a star in his press conference today, sounding like a pro already. And "starter" Andy Dalton is just avoiding all questions about whether he thinks he'll start or not and making general statements. "I've been a part of so many systems that there's not many plays that are new to me." Pin a rose on your nose, Andy.

49ers

  • San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday (again) that Jimmy Garoppolo is still the starter and that rookie Trey Lance isn't ready at this time to take reps with the No. 1's. So please listen to him. The Niners gave up a lot to get their guy at No.3, but he likely won't be the guy this year - and that's OK. "Trey can wait till he's at his best self, which doesn't happen overnight."

rams

  • This year, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is probably the player with the largest magnifying glass on him since he's migrated to an actual NFL team this offseason. He's hit his first snag in the road by banging his thumb on a helmet during Monday's training camp practice. Don't panic yet -- the team thinks he'll be okay as of now.

The Rams got a scare when QB Matthew Stafford hit his throwing thumb on a helmet near the end of practice. Stafford left the field with the thumb wrapped, but holding his helmet with that hand. "I don't know anything yet," coach Sean McVay said. "I think he'll be OK."
