After two horrible roughing the passer calls in Week Five, where does the NFL go from here? Well, how about nowhere near how referee Carl Cheffers tried to explain it?

Here’s what referee Carl Cheffers told pool reporter @adamteicher about last night’s roughing the passer penalty against #Chiefs DL Chris Jones: pic.twitter.com/sDMtRCOOZZ

This is not how the NFL should proceed in carrying out these calls. But, unfortunately, the referees still think they're correct. A defender cannot, physically, at 300-plus pounds, stop himself from landing on a player while trying to make a tackle. It is literally impossible. Chris Jones last night (while also holding the football) put out his hand to brace the landing against Derek Carr so as not to try to land on him completely.

This leaves defensive players at a loss for how to play effectively versus how just not to try to touch the quarterback at all. The NFL needs to step in and do something before they ruin the sport. Not a single person, even Raiders fans, thought that was a good call.

more:

  • Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield left Sunday's game in a walking boot. While x-rays came back negative, an MRI revealed Monday that he has a high-ankle sprain. Mayfield is expected to avoid injured reserve for now, but expect PJ Walker to make a few starts in his place. They could have had Jimmy Garoppolo. Sad.

#Panthers QB Baker Mayfield received second opinions on his high ankle sprain that confirmed there’s no major damage and no surgery needed, per sources. He’s not going on IR as of now, leaving open the possibility he could be back within four games.

  • After throwing his quarterback under the bus Monday, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera owned up to his words on Tuesday, saying he had a bad day. Honestly, I'd be having a bad year in general if I were the head coach of this team.
