THE DROP-BACK: Wednesday November 24 - Should brady be penalized for this slide?

11/24/2021

buccaneers

We all remember when Tom Brady was fined $10,000 for sliding and purposefully ("accidentally," according to him) kicked Ed Reed in the leg, right? Well, it appears he may have done it again. Brady slid during a scramble in Monday night's Tampa Bay Buccaneers win against the New York Giants, and as he slid, Brady raised his leg right into Giants DB Xavier McKinney's lower leg. So, what do you think? Accident or on purpose?

THAT'S OUR QB! □

Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens were able to squeeze out a win on Sunday without starting quarterback Lamar Jackson, and it looks like he'll be well enough to be under-center next week. Head coach John Harbaugh said, "he felt good today. I don't know how good. But he feels much better today, from what I was told." So have we figured out WHY the Ravens made him travel to Chicago in the first place? Let me know.

vikings

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kirk Cousins has been the main reason for the Minnesota Vikings' success this season. (Before you ask me if 5-5 is considered "successful," they're currently in playoff position and have had back-t0-back wins. Baby steps.) Cousins has been taking more shots downfield, and it's been paying off. Of course, head coach Mike Zimmer wouldn't mind if Cousins continued to do more of that. "I want Cousins to keep doing it like he's doing it. He can't second-guess himself."

Washington

This season, Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke was thrown to the wolves as the starter after Ryan Fitzpatrick was injured. Through an up-and-down season, Heinicke is currently on the "up" trajectory. Head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged that Heinicke has continued to grow throughout the season. "What we want from that position is a guy that can manage it and then make plays when he needs to. And this is what this guy does. He's smart. He understands the game. He's just a guy that, again, has only had 11 starts, and we'll see how it continues to go." Heinicke is totally gonna trick Washington into not drafting a quarterback again, isn't he?

packers

After Aaron Rodgers' COVID fiasco, there's another roadblock in his way: an injured toe. Rodgers has said it's a little worse than turf toe, and it's pretty painful. However, Rodgers plans to play through the injury, as it's likely his last season with the Green Bay Packers.

How's the toe Aaron??

"It's worse than turf toe & it's definitely not going away.. I've already talked enough about my medical status on this show" □□ ~@AaronRodgers12#PatMcAfeeShowLIVE pic.twitter.com/GSt30ttahR

jets

Heavy sigh. On Tuesday, the New York Jets announced that rookie QB Zach Wilson was cleared to start on Sunday against the Houston Texans. That's good for them because they don't have many other options. After being listed as close contacts, the Jets put both Joe Flacco and Mike White on the COVID-19 reserve list. Don't say it.

The Jets have placed QB Joe Flacco and QB Mike White on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: Chiefs win ugly

Both quarterbacks trade interceptions in first quarter

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was first, throwing his tenth pick of the season. The drive seemed to be going great; I had the tweets in the drafts dialed up. Then the pass was batted in the air and Julian Love came down with the interception in the endzone.

THE DROP-BACK: OCTOBER 15 - Daniel jones has limited practice thursday

10/15/2021

giants

After being knocked out (literally) of the game last weekend, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones returned to practice on Thursday on a limited basis. Jones' status is still up in the air, as he is currently progressing through concussion protocol and has to be cleared in order to play this week.

Giants HC Joe Judge is on a call with LA media this morning (“LMK what you guys need to get the job done”).

On QB Daniel Jones: Progressing thru concussion protocol and will participate in non-contact practice today.

On QB Stafford: “There’s really not a throw he can’t make.”

STEELERS

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers are struggling this season, but they finally snapped their losing streak last week. Could this be the spark they need to keep things going? Roethlisberger says they still have a lot of work to do. "We're not by any means going to sit here and say we're fixed; we're this great offense. We're not there yet. We still have a long way to go." Well, at least he's aware.
OLIPOP - A new kind of soda.

chargers

In probably one of the best quotes I've heard this entire season, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert... well, I'll just leave it here.

THE DROP-BACK: Thursday 08/12 - when will we see Dak Prescott?

8/12/2021

cowboys

  • Probably the front-runner already for the Comeback Player of the Year Award; questions are swirling about when we will see quarterback Dak Prescott on the field with the Dallas Cowboys. Prescott has been dealing with a shoulder injury in camp in addition to working his way back on the field from a gruesome injury sustained last season. Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones says worrying about when we'll see him is "overrated."

Stephen Jones said Dak could play in preseason but – “I know people worry about that, but I think that’s overrated. Dak Prescott knows how to play the game of football and whether he plays a series or two in Houston isn’t going to affect how he’s going to play against Tampa

— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) August 11, 2021
  • According to Prescott, however, we won't have to wait too much longer. Wanting to get reps before the real thing, Prescott says he plans to play in the Cowboys' third preseason game.

Dak Prescott said he will undergo another MRI following team’s return to Dallas. Glad he pulled himself from practice on July 28. “I’ve never felt anything in my arm, so that was the first alarm that went off.” https://t.co/YrNU1GJYAO

— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) August 11, 2021

seahawks

  • The Seattle Seahawks have some looming contracts on the horizon, specifically safety Jamal Adams and tackle Duane Brown. The team might have to do the routine restructuring to some existing deals to get some of these players paid. Quarterback Russell Wilson says he's willing to restructure his contract to keep both Adams and Brown and get them paid.

Steelers

  • No Ben Roethlisberger for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the preseason. Backup quarterback Mason Rudolph will start the second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, followed by Dwayne Haskins, as both are battling for the backup spot. "It will be very similar to last week for who you would consider front-line guys," head coach Mike Tomlin said.

giants

  • New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is heading into his long-awaited ~* third season *~ and we all know what that means: it's the year where the team either commits to you or cuts you loose. But no pressure, Daniel. General Manager Dave Gettleman acknowledged the importance of this year for Jones, saying, "What can I tell you? I'm stating the obvious." Gettleman went on the state some of the hardships Jones has faced in his first two seasons, including switching offenses.

colts

  • While it seemed just last week that wouldn't see starting quarterback Carson Wentz with the Indianapolis Colts to open the season, it now looks like he's trending in the direction of starting Week One. On Wednesday, head coach Frank Reich said that Wentz (and teammate Quenton Nelson, who ironically has the same injury) is "doing exceedingly well. But it is still early... So you can't really tell until you get out there and test it. We know we're a week or so away from that happening at a more significant level, but all signs are pretty positive right now."

texans

  • Official (sort of?) depth charts are starting to come out from various teams around the league, and  one we have been waiting to see is the quarterback depth chart for the Houston Texans. More specifically, where does Deshaun Watson land? Watson is listed at fourth on the Texans' depth chart, which makes me think we won't see him at all. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

The Texans’ unofficial depth chart (that says it is updated by @TexansPR), lists Deshaun Watson as the Texans’ fourth quarterback. pic.twitter.com/llKMW7C3zE

washington

  • ESPN hired former Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith, who officially retired this offseason. He'll appear part-time on shows like Monday Night Countdown, according to reports. I love this move; I think he'll add great insight, and we don't have to physically cringe every time he drops back.

raiders

  • I hope this doesn't happen, but Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr says he wants to be like Tom Brady and play into his 40s. -side eye emoji- "I feel like I can play another 15 years," Carr said. "Nothing's hurting. It's the middle of camp, and I feel great." Just wait, Derek. Just wait.

jets

  • New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson hasn't really had the best camp right now, but that doesn't mean he's not learning how the NFL works. Part of that, as a QB, is reading a defense, and training camp is when you can work out those kinks before you're playing other NFL defenses. Wilson spoke about how he's doing just that. "I can't be afraid to make mistakes, especially in practice. This isn't a game. This is where I'm learning what I can get away with and what I can't. There's times when maybe in a real game, I probably wouldn't throw that."

  • Indianapolis Colts QB Carson Wentz had some advice for fellow NDSU alum Trey Lance on being a rookie in the NFL. "He's in a great situation. They have a great culture there in San Fran, a good coaching staff. So I know he's going to do a great job, and I'm excited for him. I just keep telling him to be himself: 'Don't let any of those things change who you are, change your values, change your perspective on football. Just go play.'"
  • Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams played together once upon a time in college. Now that Adams' situation with his current QB (Aaron Rodgers) is up in the air, could Carr see them playing together again? Absolutely, he says.

From @FresnoStateFB ➡️@Raiders? @derekcarrqb all in and ready to recruit @tae15adams when the time comes. I think we all want to see Adams, Carr, and @jakehaener10 battle on the course □ @ABC30 pic.twitter.com/BogxTgZKp8

  • Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is up for a big season in 2021 but won't let the failures of the 2020 season affect it. After a strong start in 2020, it seemed like things went slowly downhill for the remainder of the fall before the team did not make the postseason. "I want to win. Not going to the playoffs is weird for me. I know it's the NFL, and I haven't been yet, but . . . I've always played past the regular season, in every sport."
  • Quarterback Alex Smith retired this year, and it seems like no one has a single bad word to say about this man, including his former teammate with the Washington Football Team, wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

  • New York Giants QB Daniel Jones has a lot of work to do this offseason and into this upcoming season, especially with the NFC East so wide open. Linebacker Cam Jordan thinks he will be up to the challenge. "I fell in love with Daniel after the first week I hung out with him going through training camp last summer. He's just a different type of competitor."
  • Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler has been looking to how new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi used Alvin Kamara with the New Orleans Saints and saw similarities between his and Kamara's play.

"I'm betting on myself to go out there and make plays. I have no doubt about that."@Chargers RB @AustinEkeler told us how excited he is to have a big season in Joe Lombardi's offense in LA.

  • Wide receiver Demariyus Thomas announced his retirement on Monday as a Denver Bronco, and what better person to talk about how great you are than Peyton Manning?

NFL Notes: Tuesday 06/22 - Eli Manning is back back

6/22/2021

  • Former starting quarterback and Super Bowl champion Eli Manning is re-joining the New York Giants -- but not in the way you would think. Manning is taking a "business operations and fan engagement role" with the team. "Staying involved with this organization is very important to me. I love the organization, love the Giants and the fans, and so I want to do anything possible to help them out and be a part of it," he said in a statement. Add this to the list of Things Eli can do that Brady can't.
  • As if we need more Tom Brady in our lives, the Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB is in a new episode of The Shop: Uninterrupted on HBO. In the trailer for the episode, Brady talks candidly about his time bout with free agency last offseason, specifically with one team that supposedly did not want to sign him in the end: "One of the teams, they weren't interested at the very end. I was thinking, you're sticking with that motherfucker?" I'm manifesting that this is about Derek Carr, but it could also be about Mitch Trubisky. And no, he isn't going to be talking about his pal â€‹Jimmy Garoppolo â€‹like that.
  • Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert will be learning a new offense this year under new head coach Brandon Staley. Herbert is looking to build upon his explosive rookie season and is spending "a few hours" each day studying his new scheme. "The tough part is memorizing and learning it all. That's where it's tough because you have to go in there and spend a lot of time watching film, practicing and repping it."
  • Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is getting a new quarterback this year, and it's one he can't stop gushing about. Experience is vital for McVay, who is looking forward to seeing what Matthew Stafford can do this year. "Bro, this dude is a bad MF-er. Whatever people say about him, as good as it can be, he's even better than advertised. It makes sense to him." We're going to learn a whole lot about Stafford this season.
  • Today in Things We Love To See, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib came out as openly gay on Monday. But better than that, he also donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project, which focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. Check out his message:

  • I feel like rookie New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has been shit-talked lately. But his teammates are keeping the faith, which I guess, they kinda have to do. Vet safety Devin McCourty thinks he has enough leadership skills to make it work at the position. "That's a different position being a young guy because you're automatically in that leadership role. But I think he's used to that."
  • The Baltimore Ravens ranked at No. 32 in passing yards and passing attempts last season, so it's not a secret that that's a significant need for improvement heading into the 2021 season. QB Lamar Jackson agreed, saying they need to focus on consistency. "We hit some of them, but we're just trying to be more consistent this year. That's where the strides happen. It starts in practices, and hopefully, it transitions to the game."
  • Despite a previous report, Buffalo Bills fans no longer have to be vaccinated to attend Bills games this season. Erie County is basing this info off of low hospitalization rates and good vaccination rates. Tell that to Cole Beasley.

Based on few new COVID-19 cases (0 on Friday and 4 yesterday out of thousands of tests), low hospitalizations, and good vaccination rates, we are rescinding the vaccination requirement to attend Bills games and stadium events. packers reiterate they want Aaron Rodgers to stay in green bay

Amidst all the rumors and reading between the lines during this Aaron Rodgers versus Green Bay Packers gauntlet, head coach Matt LaFleur finally spoke to the media after the first rookie minicamp meeting. If LaFleur thought he would be asked about just the rookies and not this whole thing, he was mad wrong. LaFleur stated that the team still wants Rodgers as their quarterback (who wouldn't) and that the team is working through the situation.

#Packers coach Matt LaFleur on Aaron Rodgers: "We still obviously feel the same way. We want him back in the worst way. I know he knows that. And we’ll continue to work at it each and every day."

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) May 14, 2021

This sounds like someone who is being broken up with and told that they have to "learn to love themselves before they love someone else," no?

LaFleur has a point, and really, what else is he supposed to say? But also, actions speak louder than words in this situation. Rodgers deserves to speak his mind and be consulted regarding certain decisions (like Tom Brady was in Tampa Bay). I'm in the camp that believes the two will come to some sort of agreement eventually, but crazier things have happened.

fully vaxxed players and staff no longer have to wear masks in team facilities

Hallelujah! While we folks who believe in science are getting vaccinated and doing the right things to get this horrible past year and a half behind us, the NFL is also incentivizing players and staff who do the same. The NFL sent a memo to teams on Friday, stating that fully vaccinated personnel (which means two shots and two weeks following the second shot) are no longer required to wear masks in team facilities. The memo also mentioned that teams will have to adhere to any local regulations.

broncos release ja'Wuan james

This is an odd one. The Denver Broncos placed offensive tackle Ja'Wuan James on the non-football injury list last week after he tore his Achilles while working out away from the team facility. They released him from the team over the weekend.

Long story short: The NFLPA was urging players to not show up to in-person workouts because it worked perfectly fine for everyone last year doing it virtually. However, there was a snag in that line of thinking which was: What happens if you get injured (and/or are declared out for the season) and it happened away from the facility because they chose not to show up, is the team still inclined to pay said player? Now, James is that example.

James sent a tweet stating his thoughts on the situation (which I agree with, by the way):

@NFLPA if your gonna advise all of us we need you to have our backs on the other end of this. https://t.co/TCwxSJqfms

— Ja'Wuan James (@JawuanJames70) May 14, 2021

James is also considering filing a grievance against the team, so this will be something to keep an eye on.

giants give kelvin benjamin a shot.. maybe at tight end

If this sounds familiar, it's because there seems to be an influx of older players trying to convert to tight end and sign with a team. The New York Giants are signing free agent wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin after a tryout this weekend, but there's a catch. Benjamin may be playing tight end.

He has the size at 6'5" and 245 pounds. But, converting to a new position after not having played in the NFL in three seasons isn't an easy task.

We have signed WR Kelvin Benjamin and RB Corey Clement

the Browns are going through it

The Cleveland Browns did not practice on Thursday due to positive COVID-19 tests, one of which was cornerback Denzel Ward. Ward will not be able to go on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers and could miss the Browns' wild card game the following week, should they make it.

There is some good news -- The NFL gave the Browns the OK to practice on Friday, after no new positive tests. The situation is still one to monitor, as we all saw the Baltimore Ravens' and Tennessee Titans' situations earlier this season.

After our latest round of testing produced zero positive results, we have received approval from the NFL to conduct a practice this afternoon.

bills activate john brown

The rich get richer -- the Buffalo Bills activated wide receiver John Brown off the COVID-19 reserve list. Buffalo added Brown to the 53-man roster after being named a close contact of TJ Yeldon. Brown missed Monday night's game due to being on the reserve list and four other games due to an ankle injury. They will need him, as WR Cole Beasley has been ruled out for Sunday's game.

giants offensive line coach tests positive for covid

A new year and all the top NFL stories today are COVID related. Shocking. New York Giants offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo tested positive and will not coach in Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

cowboys have a player test positive

Speaking of the Giants' opponent... the Cowboys are also working remotely on Friday due to a player testing positive. The plan for the team (if there are no other positives) is to return to practice on Saturday before traveling to New Jersey.

#Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters the team will work virtually today and that they are in extended COVID-19 protocols. They had a player test positive, source said.

alvin kamara will miss sunday, maybe postseason with positive test

Another one. New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara will miss Sunday's game due to a positive COVID-19 test. He may miss the first postseason game as well, which will certainly put a damper on the Saints' chances of winning.

Saints’ RB Alvin Kamara tested positive again and will be placed on Reserve/COVID, per source. He’s out Sunday and now the question will be whether he reruns for the first playoff game.

And yes, most of the top stories today are COVID-19 related. We're a week out from Christmas, and it'll only get worse based on what I saw on Instagram stories last night.
